Chapter 16 - Vanessa Crashes the Charity Gala with a Darker Secret

The Metropolitan Heritage Gala at the Drake Hotel was supposed to mark Emily’s formal debut into Chicago society as a voting member of the Hale Enterprises governing board. Instead, it became an ambush.
The grand ballroom hummed with the clinking of crystal flutes, the murmur of old-money patrons, and the strains of a string quartet performing Vivaldi. Daniel remained anchored at Emily’s side, fielding congratulations and subtle inquiries from city council members and venture capitalists who had watched the viral footage of his interrupted nuptials. Emily handled every handshake with razor-sharp poise, deflecting pity with unyielding dignity.
Then the room fell abruptly quiet near the arched grand entrance.
Vanessa stood beneath the chandeliers.
She wore a backless crimson gown that clung to her silhouette like fresh blood. Her hair was swept into an intricate updo, her porcelain neck bare—completely devoid of jewelry, as if making an ostentatious statement about what had been stripped from her. She did not look humiliated. She looked like a woman who had run out of things to lose.
Gasps rippled through the socialites. Security guards shifted their weight, eyeing Daniel for an order to escort his former fiancée out. But before anyone could intervene, Vanessa bypassed the champagne stations, her heels clicking with deliberate slowness across the parquet floor, heading straight for Daniel and Emily.
"Daniel," she whispered. Her voice carried an unnatural stillness, devoid of the theatrical arrogance she had weaponized on their wedding day. "Emily."
Daniel stepped forward, blocking his sister instinctively. "You weren't invited, Vanessa. Leave before I have security remove you through the service exit—the same way you tried to throw Emily out."
Vanessa’s lips curled, but there was no triumph in her smile, only a hollow bitterness. "You think you won, Daniel. You think cutting up my father’s trust and freezing Mother out of the subsidiary shares solved the problem."
"Vanessa, stop," Emily interjected, her voice cutting through the tension with surgical precision. "I read your letter. If you came here to stage another dramatic monologue, you’re wasting your breath. The board confirmed my seat yesterday."
"I don't give a damn about your seat, Emily," Vanessa hissed, taking a sudden step closer, her manicured hands trembling against the velvet clutch she held. "My mother didn't come up with the bracelet setup on her own. Do you really believe she cared enough about Richard’s estranged bastard to orchestrate an entire police report at a black-tie reception?"
Daniel’s blood turned cold. "What did you say?"
"My mother was taking orders," Vanessa whispered, her gaze darting toward the VIP balcony where several senior board members stood watching. "The debts my father left behind weren't from bad real estate investments. Someone bought his loans. Someone who wanted your father’s voting majority liquidated before the merger went through."

She shoved a crumpled slip of carbon paper into Daniel’s chest. "Julian Vance owns my family’s debt, Daniel. And Julian Vance is currently sitting on your father’s audit committee."
