Chapter 32 - The Forty-Billion-Dollar Signature

"Don't move, Daniel," Julian said smoothly, stepping back so he kept Clara in his line of sight while aiming his weapon squarely at Emily’s chest. "You take one step forward, and your sweet little sister joins her mother in the morgue."

"Julian, you're finished," Daniel snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "The airstrip is blown. Federal agents are already tracing the flight plan. Vanessa sang like a bird before you ran her off the road."

Julian laughed—a high, brittle, unhinged sound. "Vanessa? That pathetic little gold-digger didn't know half of it! She thought this was about an emerald bracelet and a trust seat. She didn't understand the scale!"

Julian kicked the base of Richard Hale’s wheelchair. The old man grunted, coughing violently into a silk handkerchief, his oxygen machine wheezing in protest.

"Tell them, Richard!" Julian barked. "Tell your golden boy why you built this cage!"

Richard lifted his head slowly, his gaze sweeping over Daniel before locking onto Emily. A strange, twisted expression crossed his withered face—not remorse, but a grotesque pride.

"You look... just like her," Richard rasped, his voice trembling with age and terminal decay. "The same stubborn chin. The same refusal to bend."

"Shut up," Emily whispered, tears streaming down her face, her eyes fixed entirely on the woman tied to the bed. "Mother..."

"Emily... my baby..." Clara sobbed, pulling against the leather restraints, her knuckles white. "Don't look at him... don't let him take what is yours..."

"She hasn't signed it, Daniel!" Julian interrupted, gesturing frantically with his gun toward the silver briefcase in Richard’s lap. "The North Harbor deep-water expansion project. It’s no longer worth four billion. The federal government just designated it the primary hub for the Great Lakes Clean Energy Corridor. The land is worth forty billion dollars!"

Julian stepped closer to the bed, pressing the hot barrel of his gun against Clara’s temple. Clara didn't flinch; she looked Julian dead in the eye with absolute disdain.

"Richard faked his death to escape the DOJ," Julian explained, his eyes bloodshot with greed. "He’s been hiding here, slowly pumping Clara full of scopolamine and sedatives, trying to break her mind so she’d sign the power of attorney over to him. But the old bastard ran out of time! His heart is shutting down. So he called me to cut a deal: fifty-fifty split if my offshore banks laundered the deed."

"I never... called you... to cut a deal, Julian," Richard wheezed, blood flecking his pale lips. A chilling smile touched the old patriarch's mouth. "I called you here... because you were the only vulture stupid enough... to bring a fully armed escort to break me out."

Julian’s smile vanished. "What did you say?"

"You think... I built an empire... to hand it to a Vance?" Richard whispered.

From beneath his cashmere blanket, Richard Hale produced a small, black detonator with a glowing red LED toggle.
