Chapter 20 - The Boardroom Ambush

Morning broke gray and suffocating over the Chicago loop.

The thirty-fifth floor of Hale Tower was locked down. Private security contractors hired by Daniel guarded every elevator bank. Inside the executive boardroom, the twenty voting directors of Hale Enterprises sat in stunned silence as Daniel and Emily walked through the double doors, flanked by Margaret Sterling and two senior attorneys from the Department of Justice.

At the head of the table sat Julian Vance.

Julian looked fifty, but moved with the predatory grace of a man half his age. His silver-streaked hair was combed back, his bespoke charcoal Savile Row suit immaculate. Beside him sat an empty leather chair.

"Daniel, Emily," Julian greeted them, offering an easy, aristocratic smile as he gestured to the empty seats. "You're late for the emergency acquisition hearing. We were just discussing the liquidation of the European logistics branch."

"The meeting is adjourned, Julian," Daniel said, slamming the thick leather binder onto the center of the conference table. "The Department of Justice has already frozen your proxy voting rights."

Julian’s smile didn't waver. He took a slow sip from his porcelain coffee cup. "On what grounds, nephew?"

"Coercion. Corporate sabotage. And the attempted framing of a principal shareholder," Emily stated, stepping forward until her hands rested firmly on the table opposite him. "We have the audio from the bridal suite. We have Margaret’s signed confession. And we have Richard’s Project Cassandra file."

Julian chuckled softly, setting his cup down with a delicate click. "Did you really think I didn't anticipate Margaret breaking? My dear sister was always sentimental. Weakness runs deep in the Vance bloodline."

He pressed a button on his intercom. "Send him in."

The heavy mahogany side door clicked open.

A young man entered the room. He couldn't have been older than twenty-four. He had Richard Hale’s sharp, aristocratic jawline, his piercing blue-gray eyes, and the unmistakable posture of an apex predator.

Behind him, flanked by two private bodyguards, walked Vanessa. Her face was pale, bruised along the cheekbone, her eyes wide with terror.

"Allow me to introduce Leo Hale," Julian murmured, his eyes glittering with triumph. "The rightful firstborn son of Richard Hale. And more importantly... the sole executor of Vanessa’s stock warrants, signed over to him precisely three hours ago."
