Chapter 23 - The Midnight Break-In at the Hale Estate

By nightfall, Julian Vance was in federal custody, held without bail on multiple counts of corporate espionage, kidnapping, and financial fraud spanning three decades. Margaret had been placed under house arrest, and Leo sat in the executive lounge of the Hale penthouse, surrounded by lawyers and the truth he had been denied his entire life.

Daniel stood by the fireplace in the penthouse library, a glass of scotch untouched in his hand. The storm outside had cleared, leaving the city lights twinkling beneath a cold, merciless sky.

"It's over," Emily said, walking into the room with two cups of herbal tea. She looked exhausted, the adrenaline of the last twenty-four hours finally draining from her posture. "The board unanimously voted to void Julian's proxies. Leo signed the reconciliation agreement. He wants nothing to do with the company, Daniel. He just wants to go home to Zurich and process everything."

Daniel didn't answer immediately. He stared into the amber liquid in his glass.

"What is it?" Emily asked, setting the cups down. "You look like you're still waiting for the slap."

"It was too easy," Daniel murmured, turning to look at his sister.

"Too easy?" Emily let out a dry, incredulous laugh. "Daniel, our wedding turned into a national scandal. Our father was revealed to have hidden a son from a murdered woman. Vanessa is ruined, Margaret is facing prison, and Julian Vance is in a federal holding cell. In what universe was that easy?"

"Julian was a master strategist, Emily. Father fought him for thirty years," Daniel said, his voice laced with an uneasy dread. "When Julian realized the FBI was in the lobby, he smiled. Did you see his face right before I hit him? He smiled."

Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered violently.

A loud electronic chime echoed through the ceiling speakers: *Perimeter breach. Sector 4. Private study.*

Daniel set his glass down instantly, reaching into the desk drawer for the compact pistol he kept secured in the safe. "Stay behind me, Emily."

They moved silently down the long, dimly lit corridor toward the master study at the rear of the penthouse. The heavy double doors of the private study stood slightly ajar. A cold breeze blew through the room, fluttering the velvet drapes.

Daniel kicked the door open, weapon raised.

The study was empty, but the window leading out to the private terrace had been forced open, its security sensor neatly clipped with specialized wire-cutters.

On Richard Hale’s antique mahogany desk, the steel wall-safe had been pried open and scorched with an industrial thermite torch. The original trust documents, the handwritten journals of Richard Hale—everything had been reduced to a pile of smoldering, black ash.

Sitting directly in the center of the smoking ashes was a cheap, black burner phone.
