Chapter 28 - The Midnight Flight North

By four in the morning, Daniel and Emily were inside the pressurized cabin of a chartered Gulfstream G450, climbing through the storm clouds at thirty thousand feet, bound for a private airstrip outside Lake Placid, New York.
The cabin was silent except for the low hum of the twin Rolls-Royce engines. Spread across the mahogany conference table were the declassified blueprints of the Havenwood facility, which Daniel’s head of security, Marcus, had managed to pull from archived state construction permits before going dark.
"Havenwood was decommissioned by the state in 1988," Daniel said, pointing a finger at the schematics. "Richard bought the property through an LLC called 'Aegis Holdings' six months later. On paper, it’s an abandoned sanitarium. In reality, it’s a high-security black site with its own private power grid, twenty-four-hour armed contractors, and biometric entry."
Emily didn't look at the blueprints. She was staring at an old, faded photograph she had kept in her locket—the only picture she possessed of Clara Hayes. A radiant, laughing woman with wild dark curls and bright hazel eyes, holding a toddler on the shores of Lake Michigan.
"She spent twenty-two years in the dark," Emily whispered, her voice devoid of tears now, replaced by an obsidian hardness. "While I was scrubbing floors, while I was taking community college classes, while I was working double shifts catering your lavish galas... my mother was sitting in a padded room because your father wanted four billion dollars."
Daniel flinched. The guilt was an anchor dragging him into an abyss. "Emily... I didn't know. If I had known—"
"You didn't know because you didn't want to see," Emily interrupted, turning her piercing gaze on him. "The Hale family needed a monster to build their kingdom, and Richard was happy to play the role. But you wore the tailored suits. You accepted the prestige. You were going to marry Vanessa Thorne to consolidate even more power."
"I broke the wedding the second she touched you!" Daniel said fiercely, leaning forward. "I threw Vanessa out in front of eight hundred people! I tore down the board to give you your seat! I am with you, Emily. To the bloody end. If I have to burn Hale Global to the ground to pull your mother out of that hell, I will strike the match myself."
Emily studied his face for a long, agonizing moment. The tension between them was electric, balanced on the knife-edge of sibling loyalty and generational sin. Finally, her expression softened, just a fraction.
"Check the gun, Daniel," she said quietly. "We’re landing in twenty minutes."
The jet banked sharply, descending through the thick cloud layer. Below, the Adirondack Mountains rose like black, jagged teeth covered in snow and pine.
Suddenly, Daniel’s satellite phone buzzed against the table. An unknown encrypted number.
Daniel hit speaker.
"Daniel," a woman's frantic voice came through the speaker, breathless and filled with terror. It wasn't Margaret.
"Vanessa?" Daniel frowned, his grip tightening on the edge of the table.
"Daniel, thank God you answered! You have to listen to me!" Vanessa sobbed, the sound of wind and tires screeching audible in the background. "Julian... Julian played me! He took my passport, he took my family’s accounts—he’s liquidating everything! He’s on his way to Havenwood right now!"
"Why would Julian go to Havenwood?" Daniel demanded.
"Because Richard isn't trying to hide Clara anymore!" Vanessa screamed. "Richard is dying! His heart is actually failing this time! Julian is going there to execute Clara Hayes before she can sign the trust over to Emily! If Clara dies without signing, the entire four-billion-dollar coastal reserve defaults to the Vance creditor syndicate! Julian has a mercenary team with him! Daniel, don't land at Lake Placid—it’s an ambush!"
A deafening blast echoed through the receiver, followed by the violent crunch of metal and shattering glass. Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek, and the line went violently dead with a burst of static.
Daniel looked up at Emily, his face pale as death.

Outside the cabin window, the runway lights of Lake Placid flickered into view—and surrounded by three black SUVs with high-powered rifles pointed directly at the descending aircraft.
