Chapter 44 - The Voice from the Crypt

Twenty minutes later, at twenty-five thousand feet aboard a stripped-down, high-speed military turboprop burning toward the Virginia mountains, Daniel’s satellite phone buzzed against his armor.

The number on the encrypted screen was blank. No area code. No routing protocol. Just a blinking cursor.

Daniel thumbed the speaker button. He didn't say a word. He just listened to the rhythmic hiss of static.

"You always had a terrible habit of surviving things meant to kill you, Daniel."

The voice sounded through the speaker with terrifying clarity. It wasn't the sweet, breathless tone that had whispered vows to him under the willow trees in Savannah. It was low, cultured, and devoid of warmth—a voice engineered to give orders to assassins.

"Where is he, Emily?" Daniel said. His voice was completely steady, stripped of all emotion, cold as deep space.

A low, melodic laugh drifted through the satellite link. "He’s asleep. I gave him a mild sedative. He cried for you, you know. He kept clutching that ridiculous stuffed bear you bought him at the county fair. Did you really think you could give him a normal life? Look at him, Daniel. He carries my DNA. He carries the Vance bloodline. He was designed from conception to control assets that govern whole nations, and you wanted him to play Little League and draw stick figures on the refrigerator."

"You made Vanessa torture him," Daniel said, his jaw muscles clenching until his teeth nearly cracked. "You watched through the cameras. You watched her put that pet collar on our son’s neck."

"Vanessa was crude, but effective," Emily replied smoothly. "A child raised with unconditional love becomes soft. Dependent. Weak. Mason needed to understand discipline. He needed to understand that love is transactional and pain is permanent. When I take him overseas tonight, he won't look for you. He will obey me. Because he knows what happens to boys who disobey."

"You're not taking him anywhere," Daniel said. "Arthur is dead. The island is at the bottom of the Atlantic. Your network is collapsing, Emily. Homeland Security has seized every Vance bank account in Zurich, London, and Grand Cayman."

Silence hung on the line for three long seconds. For the first time, a microscopic sliver of irritation slipped into Emily’s tone.

"Arthur was an arrogant old fool who lived long past his usefulness," she said, her voice turning sharp as surgical steel. "Those accounts were decoys, Daniel. The real wealth—the untraceable four billion in military cryptocurrency and proprietary bio-patents—isn't held in a bank. It’s stored on a cold-storage quantum drive inside the vault at Oakhaven. And the only encryption key that can decrypt it is the unique genetic retinal and vascular profile of Arthur Vance’s only direct male descendant."

Daniel’s breath caught in his chest. "Mason."

"Arthur was sterile, Daniel," Emily whispered, and Daniel could hear the triumphant smile spreading across her lips. "He used his own brother's frozen genetic material to fertilize my embryo. Mason isn't just your son, Daniel. He is the sole biological heir to the Vance dynasty. Arthur didn't know that. But I did. I planned this before I ever laid eyes on you."

"I am going to kill you," Daniel said, every syllable a promise carved in blood.

"Then come to Oakhaven," Emily murmured. "Come see what remains of your family. If you're five minutes late, I won't need Mason's eyes intact to harvest the scan. I only need the retina."

The line went dead.
