Chapter 38 - The Fortress on the Black Water

The tactical team had evacuated Mason and Daniel just as the ship tore away from Pier 48, but Arthur Vance had escaped out into the storm with the *Carthage*, locking the bridge with hydraulic bulkheads that could withstand anti-tank munitions.
Forty-eight hours later.
Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit was heavily guarded by federal marshals. Daniel awoke from a medically induced coma, his body bound in tight white bandages, an IV line dripping heavy antibiotics and painkillers into his arm.
Sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, holding a half-eaten box of apple juice, was Mason.
The boy’s eyes were still haunted, the shadow of weeks of psychological and physical torture not yet erased, but when he saw Daniel’s eyes flutter open, the color returned to his face.
“Daddy,” Mason breathed, throwing his tiny arms around Daniel’s neck, burying his face into Daniel’s uninjured shoulder.
Daniel winced through the pain, wrapping his right arm tightly around his son, burying his face in Mason’s hair. The scent of baby shampoo and fresh rain filled his senses, completely washing away the stench of gunpowder and iron. Tears streamed silently down Daniel’s face.
“I’m here, Mason,” Daniel wept, kissing the top of the boy’s head over and over. “You’re safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Nobody.”
The door opened softly, and Agent Thorne stepped in. He had dark circles under his eyes, looking as though he hadn't slept in three days.
“You’re awake,” Thorne said quietly, nodding to the marshal outside to close the door.
“Where is Arthur?” Daniel asked, his voice raw, his hand stroking Mason’s back.
Thorne pulled up a tablet, displaying a high-resolution satellite feed of an uncharted island located seventy miles off the coast of Vancouver Island—a jagged, rocky spit of land covered in dense hemlock forests, fortified with concrete sea walls and a private deep-water dock.
“The Coast Guard pursued the *Carthage*, but Arthur abandoned ship on a high-speed stealth tender before they could intercept,” Thorne explained grimly. “He made it to Sanctuary Cay. It’s an unregistered, sovereign private compound built by the Vance family during the Cold War. It’s ringed with radar-guided surface-to-surface missiles and staffed by fifty heavily armed private contractors.”
“Can the military strike it?” Daniel asked.
“The island sits in disputed international waters,” Thorne replied, his jaw tight. “Diplomatic channels are stalled. And worse... Arthur just filed an emergency international injunction from an offshore server. He’s claiming legal custody of Mason through a handwritten codicil signed by Emily before she died.”

Daniel stiffened. “Emily would never sign anything over to that monster.”
“It’s a forgery,” Thorne said. “A brilliant one. And until an international magistrate reviews it, our federal warrants are held up in the Hague. If Arthur’s mercenaries extract Mason out of this country, we will never see him again.”
