Chapter 30 - The Shadow at the Hospital Glass

Outside, the megaphone clicked again.
“You have sixty seconds, Daniel,” Diane’s voice carried through the thin pine walls, sweet as poisoned honey. “Bring my grandson out. He belongs to the Vance bloodline now. Vanessa will raise him in South America. If you walk out with your hands up, I’ll let you die quickly. If I have to send my men inside... I’ll have them bring me the boy’s collar, and I will make you watch.”
Daniel looked at the satellite terminal.
The screen glowed green: *FEDERAL SECURE UPLINK AVAILABLE.*
The port on the side of the terminal blinked, waiting for an input.
Daniel slid the encrypted titanium flash drive into the slot. The terminal screen flickered violently as lines of code began cascading down the monitor at blinding speed.
**[DATA INGESTION COMMENCED]**
**[DECRYPTING: OPERATION CIRCE - VANCE ENTERPRISES]**
**[UPLINK TARGET: DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE - SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION]**
**[PROGRESS: 12%... 24%... 48%...]**
“Hurry,” Daniel whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger of the submachine gun as he positioned himself by the heavy pine door. “Hurry, Emily...”
*BOOM!*
The front door of the hunting cabin blew inward off its hinges, blown apart by a breaching charge.
Wood splinters rained through the room. Smoke and blinding flash-bang light detonated inside the cabin, disorienting Daniel’s senses.
Through the haze, Daniel fired a controlled burst toward the doorway, catching the first operative in the neck, dropping him instantly onto the threshold.
The second operative charged through the smoke, his rifle spitting fire. A round ripped through Daniel’s left shoulder, the blunt force spinning him around and slamming him against the wall. Daniel dropped his weapon, crashing to his knees as blood gushed down his arm.
Diane Vance walked through the ruined doorway, holding a pearl-handled .38 revolver.
She looked down at Daniel, her eyes cold, unblinking, devoid of all humanity. Behind her, the headlights of two more unmarked black SUVs illuminated the woods, their doors swinging open to reveal more armed men stepping into the clearing.
“It ends where it began, Daniel,” Diane said softly, leveling the revolver directly between Daniel’s eyes. “With the death of someone who refused to understand their place.”
She began to squeeze the trigger.
*DING.*
Behind her, on the dusty desk, the satellite terminal screen flashed a blinding, solid green. A synthetic voice echoed from the small speakers:
**[UPLINK COMPLETE. 4.2 TERABYTES TRANSMITTED TO U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL. RED NOTICE ISSUED. TARGET IDENTIFIED: DIANE VANCE.]**
Diane froze. Her eyes flicked toward the screen.
And at that exact fraction of a second, from the dark canopy of the forest surrounding the cabin, the deep, thunderous chop of twin helicopter rotors shattered the night sky.
Four blinding searchlights pierced through the trees from above, turning the clearing into high noon. Over a booming tactical loudspeaker, a deafening voice rained down from the sky:
*“FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! STEP AWAY FROM THE BUILDING! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!”*
Diane’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked back at Daniel, her finger shaking on the trigger of the revolver.
“If I go down,” Diane whispered with a horrific, venomous grin, “you don't get to see tomorrow.”
May you like
Her finger tightened all the way.
*BANG.*
