Chapter 37 - The Breaking Point

The iron wrench whistled through the freezing air, aimed directly at Daniel’s fingers gripping the ledge. If it hit, his bones would shatter, and both he and Mason would plummet into the roaring incinerator shaft below.
*CRACK!*
A gunshot echoed through the container stacks. Vanessa’s body jerked violently. The iron wrench flew from her grasp, clattering harmlessly against the steel deck before tumbling into the abyss.
Vanessa staggered backward, clutching her throat, her eyes wide with shock. She collapsed against the side of the container, sliding down in a trail of dark red, gasping for air as her life spilled out onto the rust.
At the edge of the container canyon stood Agent Thorne, smoke curling from the barrel of his standard-issue Sig Sauer, followed by six tactical HRT operators with rifles raised.
“THORNE! GRAB THE BOY!” Daniel yelled, his single hand slipping on the slick, blood-covered rim of the hatch. His muscles tore; his vision was going completely dark. “I CAN’T HOLD!”
Thorne broke into a desperate sprint, sliding on his knees across the wet metal deck, reaching out with both hands just as Daniel’s fingers lost their grip.
Thorne’s tactical glove clamped onto the collar of Mason’s pajamas with brute, crushing force, hauling the six-year-old child up over the ledge with a violent heave. Two operators immediately swarmed, slicing the zip-ties and pulling Mason away into the safety of their ballistic shields.
“Got him! I’ve got the boy!” Thorne shouted.
With his other hand, Thorne grabbed the wrist of Daniel’s shattered arm, pulling him up with an agonizing jerk. Daniel tumbled onto the deck, vomiting blood and seawater, his body trembling violently in shock.
Across the deck, Arthur Vance didn't surrender. Seeing his niece dying on the floorboards and the child secured, Arthur turned and bolted toward the ship’s bridge, slamming a heavy watertight steel door behind him.
“Secure the perimeter! Medic on deck!” Thorne yelled into his radio, kneeling over Daniel and applying pressure to his gushing flank. “Hold on, Daniel! The chopper’s landing on the pier! You did it! Mason is safe!”
Daniel rolled his head over. Mason was wrapped in a thermal foil blanket, clutching Emily’s teddy bear to his chest, crying uncontrollably. But through his tears, the boy saw his father.
“Daddy...” Mason whispered, his voice shaking. “Daddy, don't sleep... please don't sleep...”
Daniel reached out with a trembling, bloodstained hand, touching his son’s cheek.
“I’m not... going anywhere, buddy,” Daniel whispered, his voice fading. “I promised... I’d always come back.”

Before Daniel’s eyes rolled back into darkness, the ship’s massive horn blared with a terrifying, mournful wail.
From the bridge tower above, the freighter’s engines surged into full throttle. The mooring cables snapped with the sound of cannon fire, whipping across the dock and severing light poles. The *Carthage* was moving—heading straight for the open waters of the Pacific.
