Chapter 43 - Red Smoke and Stolen Wings

Daniel’s fingers caught the slick lip of the Black Hawk’s diamond-plate floor. The crew chief grabbed his tactical harness with both hands, muscles straining as the helicopter violently yawed to avoid a collapsing radio tower. With a savage heave, the crew chief hauled Daniel into the cabin just as the ground below them detonated in a fountain of fire, pulverized rock, and seawater.
The island fortress of Arthur Vance collapsed into the sea, swallowed by thirty-foot swells.
Daniel lay on his back on the vibrating metal deck, gasping for air, the taste of cordite and salt coating his tongue. He didn't rest for more than three seconds. He pulled the encrypted drive from his chest rig and shoved it into the lap of the tactical communications officer sitting at the airborne operations console.
"I need coordinates," Daniel barked, pulling himself up onto a bench seat and strapping in. "The Virginia safe house. When was the feed cut?"
The comms officer plugged the drive in, his fingers flying across the ruggedized keyboard. Multiple screens flared to life with encrypted telemetry, GPS tracking data, and private flight manifests.
"The feed cut eighty seconds ago, sir," the officer said, his face draining of color as he read the logs. "Local state police responded to an automated perimeter alarm at the safe house. When the first two troopers entered the gate... they were hit with remote claymores. Both cruisers were incinerated."
"And Emily?" Daniel leaned in, his eyes burning with a lethal focus.
"A private medical evacuation helicopter lifted off from a clearing two miles south of the safe house four minutes ago," the officer said, pulling up a radar track. "Transponder code shows an emergency civilian tail number, but the FAA registry is a ghost corporation tied directly to Vance Global Logistics. They're heading north-northwest toward the Shenandoah Valley."
"Shenandoah?" Daniel’s mind raced through every map, every classified military installation, every hunting cabin Emily had ever mentioned during their five years of marriage.
Then it hit him like a round to the gut.
The Black Vault of Oakhaven.
It was an abandoned Cold War subterranean government bunker built into the spine of Massanutten Mountain, decommissioned in 1989 and bought at a private federal auction in 1994 by an offshore holding firm. During their marriage, Emily had inherited a five-hundred-acre estate bordering that exact mountain ridge. She had claimed it was a rustic family apple orchard left by an eccentric aunt.
She had been setting the chessboard before Mason was even born.
"Pilot!" Daniel shouted into his headset, the mic picking up the razor-edge fury in his voice. "We don't fly back to Norfolk. Route us straight to Massanutten Peak! Maximum speed!"
"Sir, that’s restricted airspace, and this bird doesn't have the fuel range to make Massanutten against this headwind," the pilot replied over the intercom.
"Then drop us at Fort Meade," Daniel demanded, his eyes fixed on the moving radar blip on the console. "Get me a supersonic transport or an armed bird from the Special Operations aviation regiment. Tell them Daniel Cross is calling in the Vance treason docket directly to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs."

The comms officer looked at Daniel with wide eyes. "Sir, your civilian clearance—"
"I don't give a damn about clearance!" Daniel snarled, leaning over the console until his face was inches from the screen. "That monster has my son. And if I have to burn every protocol in this country to rip him out of her hands, that is exactly what I will do."
