Chapter 24 - The Hidden Trigger in the Gun Safe

The descent into the darkness of the ground floor was a march to an execution.

Garrett walked two paces behind Daniel, the serrated edge of the survival knife pressed firmly against the base of Daniel’s skull, just above his cervical spine. Every step sent a jolt of agony through Daniel’s fractured ribs, but his mind had never been clearer.

The air in the living room was cold. A draft blew through from the smashed storm cellar doors in the basement. Outside, the night was eerily quiet. No sirens. No neighbors turning on lights.

“Where are your phones, Daniel?” Garrett murmured mockingly into his ear. “Wondering why the neighborhood patrol hasn't driven by? My associate parked a broadband jammer two blocks away in an unmarked utility van. Not a single cell tower within a mile radius is accepting an emergency signal from this house.”

*He didn't come alone.* The realization struck Daniel like a bucket of ice water. There was an accomplice outside.

“Down,” Garrett ordered, shoving him toward the open basement doorway.

The basement smelled of wet limestone, damp earth, and centuries-old cedar. As they descended the wooden stairs, Daniel’s eyes adjusted to the shadows. He knew every square inch of this basement; he had renovated the entire foundation with his own hands when he and Emily first bought the farmhouse.

At the far end of the cellar, past the washer and dryer, stood the heavy cast-iron door of the vintage fireproof vault Emily’s grandfather had installed during the Cold War.

“Open it,” Garrett commanded, keeping the blade steady. “No games. You dial the combination, pull the handle, and step back.”

Daniel walked toward the vault, his bare feet numb against the freezing concrete floor. He reached up, placing his fingers on the heavy brass dial of the safe.

*Left to 44. Right to 18. Left to 92.*

The tumblers clicked into place with a deep, authoritative thud.

“Now open it,” Garrett stepped closer, his breath blowing against Daniel’s neck, the temptation of millions blinding his tactical awareness for a split fraction of a second.

Daniel didn't pull the main vault handle outward. Instead, his fingers slipped underneath the false steel casing of the digital override panel beside the dial—where he had rigged a secondary emergency release system connected directly to the home’s auxiliary backup generator.

*CLICK.*

Daniel threw the hidden industrial breaker.

Instantly, the ceiling above them shuddered. The heavy industrial workshop lights—four thousand watts of high-intensity halogen work lamps installed for Daniel’s architectural drafting table—blazed to life simultaneously with a violent, electric hum.

The sudden, piercing brilliance was blinding. Garrett shrieked, instinctively throwing an arm over his eyes as the glare overwhelmed him after twenty minutes in pitch blackness.

Daniel pivoted with all the strength left in his body.

He didn't aim for Garrett’s knife. He grabbed the heavy, six-inch steel locking bar of the vault door and swung it violently outward.

*CRACK!*

The solid steel slab slammed squarely into Garrett’s broken leg. The mercenary’s kneecap gave way with a sickening pop, and he collapsed onto the concrete floor, his knife clattering away into the drainage sump pump beneath the stairs.

Daniel didn't hesitate. He seized a heavy iron pipe wrench from his workbench, raised it high above his head, and brought it down hard across Garrett’s right shoulder, dislocating the joint and pinning the massive man to the damp floor.

“Emily’s crash,” Daniel roared, his voice shaking with a rage that shook the very foundations of the house. “Tell me what you did to her, or you will never leave this basement alive!”
