Chapter 22 - The Brother Who Was Declared Dead

Daniel didn't give him the chance to take another step.

He lunged from the shadows, flicking the tactical flashlight to maximum output at the exact instant he squeezed the trigger. Twelve hundred lumens of blinding white strobe light exploded directly into Garrett’s night-adjusted retinas, accompanied by the deafening roar of a nine-millimeter round tearing through the hallway.

*BANG!*

The gunshot inside the enclosed second-floor corridor was catastrophic, shattering the silence of the suburban night. Plaster exploded off the doorframe behind Garrett.

But Garrett was no ordinary home invader. The moment the light flashed, muscle memory forged in combat zones took over; he ducked hard, throwing his massive shoulder forward to close the distance. The bullet grazed his collarbone, shredding through the olive fabric of his jacket without biting deep into flesh.

Before Daniel could acquire a second sight picture, Garrett’s arm whipped outward.

The heavy iron dog chain slammed across Daniel’s wrists with bone-crushing force. The Sig Sauer was wrenched from Daniel’s grip, skittering across the floorboards and disappearing down the open stairwell into the darkness below.

“Cute,” Garrett snarled through clenched teeth, his vision clearing as he barreled forward.

His bulk hit Daniel like a freight train. Both men crashed into the drywall opposite Mason’s bedroom, the wooden studs groaning under the impact. Garrett’s forearm drove upward, pinning Daniel’s throat against the wall, cutting off his oxygen supply with ruthless, mechanical precision.

Up close, Daniel could smell him: sour sweat, stale gunpowder, and the cloying, cheap lavender perfume that Diane Vance always wore. He had visited her in the visitation booth before coming here.

“You think a couple of subpoenas and a viral video can bring down the Vance family?” Garrett sneered, his breath hot and rancid against Daniel’s cheek. “You’re an architect, Dan. You draw pretty little houses on paper. I dismantle men with my bare hands for government contracts. Did you really think Diane didn't have an insurance policy?”

Daniel choked, clawing at Garrett’s iron forearm with both hands, his heels drumming helplessly against the baseboards. Darkness crept into the edges of his vision, red static sparkling across his retinas.

“My mother built an empire while you were still playing with building blocks,” Garrett hissed, leaning in so close their foreheads nearly touched. “The real estate trusts, the shell corporations... Vanessa was just the puppet meant to secure your estate after your first wife conveniently disappeared off that winding mountain road.”

Daniel’s blood turned from fire to ice. Through the suffocating fog of asphyxiation, the words struck his soul like a sledgehammer.

*Conveniently disappeared.*

Emily’s car crash. Three years ago. The faulty brake line on the rain-slicked highway. The police report that had ruled it an unavoidable mechanical failure.

“What... did you say?” Daniel managed to wheeze out through crushed vocal cords.

Garrett smiled, a wide, grotesque grin in the silver moonlight. “Did you really think Emily’s brakes cut themselves, Daniel? Diane wanted this property five years ago. Emily said no. Vanessa was plan B. But you... you ruined the timeline by opening your mouth to the district attorney.”

With a brutal twist, Garrett slammed Daniel’s head back against the wall, intending to knock him cold.

*CLANG!*

A sharp, metallic crack echoed through the hall. Garrett let out an agonized howl, releasing his grip on Daniel’s throat and staggering backward, clutching the back of his knee.

Standing in the doorway of his bedroom, his tiny knuckles white, stood six-year-old Mason.

In his hands, he wielded Emily’s heavy antique brass desk clock—the one that sat on his nightstand. The sharp brass foot had split right through Garrett’s denim trousers into his hamstring.

“Get away from my dad!” Mason screamed, his voice breaking through the terror, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.
