Chapter 28 - The Safe House That Wasn't Safe

Three miles through the freezing Appalachian backcountry pushed Daniel to the edge of physical collapse. His feet were lacerated by sharp shale and brambles, his left eye was swollen completely shut, and every breath tasted of iron and smoke.

Yet, he didn't stop until the tree line broke into an old logging road where a dilapidated, single-story hunting cabin sat hidden behind overgrown birch trees.

This was the safe house Detective Reynolds had discreetly mentioned two days before the trial—an off-the-grid ranger cabin equipped with an emergency satellite phone and a locked medicine chest, used by fish and wildlife officers during severe blizzards.

Daniel approached the cabin from the blind side, his captured weapon raised, his senses raw.

The cabin was silent. A dusty green pickup truck sat parked under a rusted metal awning.

Daniel pushed through the unlocked rear utility door, set Mason gently onto a dusty vinyl sofa, and immediately jammed an iron poker beneath the door handle to secure it.

“Stay here, Mason. Don't move an inch,” Daniel commanded quietly.

He found the satellite communications case under the floorboards in the pantry, just as Reynolds had described. He snapped the latches open, flipped the power toggle on the heavy briefcase, and waited for the green carrier signal to link with the satellite array overhead.

*BEEP. CARRIER ESTABLISHED.*

Daniel punched in the direct, scrambled line to Reynolds’ personal secure mobile.

The phone rang twice before a breathless voice answered.

*“Reynolds here! Who is this?”*

“Reynolds, it’s Daniel,” Daniel rasped into the receiver. “Garrett Vance wasn't dead. He hit my house. They burned it to the ground. Diane escaped transport on Route 9. They have contractors hunting us. We’re at the Pine Ridge cabin.”

The line fell dead silent for four agonizing seconds. The only sound was the faint hum of an engine on Reynolds’ end.

*“Daniel... listen to me very carefully,”* Reynolds said, his voice dropping into a harsh, frantic whisper. *“Do not stay inside that cabin. Get Mason and get out into the brush right now.”*

Daniel’s blood froze. “What are you talking about? You gave me these coordinates!”

*“I didn't give them to you alone, Daniel!”* Reynolds hissed, the terror in the veteran detective’s voice undeniable. *“The precinct dispatch commander... Captain Miller... he was in the room when we filed the safe house log. Twenty minutes ago, state troopers found Miller dead in his squad car behind the precinct with a gunshot to the back of his head. His phone was unlocked... and the last outgoing call was to Diane Vance’s encrypted burner.”*

Before Daniel could even pull the receiver away from his ear, the roar of a high-displacement engine tore through the quiet night outside the cabin.

Headlights cut through the dusty windows, casting the shadow of the window frame against the far wall like the bars of a prison cell.
