Chapter 31 - The Sniper’s Bullet and the Red Rain

The muzzle flash illuminated Diane Vance’s face with a ghastly, sulfuric glow, but before the lead slug could tear through Daniel’s brainstem, the universe fractured into deafening chaos.
A high-velocity .308 round fired from an FBI Hostage Rescue Team sniper perched on the skid of the hovering Black Hawk punched through the cabin’s cedar shingles. It ripped clean through Diane’s right forearm, shattering the radius and ulna in a spray of scarlet bone fragments. The kinetic impact violently jerked her arm upward. The pearl-handled .38 roared, but its bullet gouged into the rotten timber ceiling just two inches above Daniel’s scalp, raining pulverized plaster and splintered pine down upon his blood-soaked hair.
Diane screeched—a sound stripped of all aristocratic elegance, the pure, animalistic shriek of a predator caught in steel jaws. She collapsed into the dirt, clutching her ruined arm against her cashmere sweater, which drank the arterial blood until it turned the color of bruised plums.
“BREACH! BREACH! BREACH!”
Flashbangs exploded in the clearing with thunderous, concussive cracks that sucked the oxygen straight from Daniel’s lungs. Blinding magnesium flares turned the night into a violent sheet of white. Tactical operators in matte-black ceramic armor poured through the shattered windows and pulverized doorframe, submachine guns raised, their weapon-mounted strobes slicing through the lingering gunsmoke.
“DOWN! ON THE GROUND! KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”
The remaining Vance private mercenaries dropped their rifles into the mud, throwing themselves facedown under the inescapable laser dots painting their spines. Special agents pinned Diane to the floorboards. She thrashed against the zip-ties, spitting blood and venomous curses, her mascara streaking across her pale, aristocratic face like cracked porcelain.
“You have no jurisdiction here!” Diane snarled, her voice hoarse, echoing against the riot shields. “Do you know who sits on my foundation’s board? Senators! Federal judges! You will all rot in federal penitentiaries before dawn!”
An agent stepped over her without a word, pressing a combat dressing against her spurting arm, treating her not like royalty, but like an ordinary, feral felon.
Daniel leaned his head back against the cabin wall, his left shoulder throbbing with an agony so profound it felt like molten iron was circulating through his veins. Every shallow breath tasted of cordite, sweat, and copper. His vision blurred at the edges, swimming in shades of charcoal and gray.
Through the ringing in his ears, heavy boots approached. Special Agent Marcus Thorne dropped to one knee beside Daniel, ripping open a field tourniquet and packing Daniel’s wound with celox gauze. The burning sting nearly made Daniel black out, but Thorne held him firm by his uninjured shoulder.
“Stay with me, Daniel,” Thorne commanded, his voice deep, gravelly, but laced with genuine urgency. “The uplink finished. Four point two terabytes. Every offshore account, every bribe, every wiretap, and every horrific recording Diane and Vanessa ever took of Mason... it’s all sitting on the Attorney General’s desk right now. The empire is dead.”
Daniel gripped Thorne’s tactical vest with trembling, blood-caked fingers. His voice was a cracked whisper that barely cut through the deafening roar of the helicopter rotors above.
“Mason...” Daniel choked out, his chest heaving. “Is my son... is he safe?”
Thorne’s jaw tightened. He hesitated for half a second—a micro-fracture of doubt that made Daniel’s heart plunge into an icy abyss.
“He was secure at St. Jude’s Children's Wing under a four-man protective detail,” Thorne said cautiously into his radio headset. “Command, this is Thorne on ground. Confirm status of Protective Detail Alpha at St. Jude’s.”
Static hissed through the radio. A breathless, panic-laced voice broke through the channel:

*“Thorne! We have a Code Black at the hospital! The power grid went down two minutes ago! Power feeds are severed, and Detail Alpha is not responding!”*
Daniel’s eyes went wide. The agony in his shoulder evaporated, burned away by a sudden, terrifying surge of pure adrenaline.
