Chapter 4 - The Brother in the Shadows

Redstone was quiet at night.
The old industrial buildings stood beneath security lights, their steel walls reflecting pale silver.
Claire arrived with a small Army team.
She had been ordered not to make direct contact until intelligence confirmed the situation.
But the order was becoming difficult to obey.
Her father was inside.
Victor Sloane was inside.
And Daniel Bennett was inside.
The man Claire had spent forty-two years not knowing existed was apparently waiting behind a locked building on an Army installation.
The team moved through the perimeter.
Claire stayed behind the command vehicle, watching thermal imagery on a monitor.
Three heat signatures.
Then four.
One moved rapidly.
Mercer spoke into the radio.
“Movement on the north side.”
Claire leaned closer.
The building door opened.
A man stepped outside.
Daniel.
Even through the grainy camera, Claire could see his face.
He looked older than her.
Tired.
Controlled.
And frightened.
A second figure followed.
Richard.
Claire's father.
She felt something crack inside her.
She had imagined confronting him a hundred times.
Never like this.
Richard raised his hands as if speaking to someone.
Daniel shook his head.
Victor Sloane emerged.
He said something.
Then Daniel shoved him.
The team moved.
Claire stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Sloane raised a handgun.
Everything changed instantly.
Mercer signaled the team.
“Down.”
Claire dropped behind the vehicle.
A single gunshot cracked across the compound.
Then another.
The tactical team moved.
Claire's heart hammered.
“Where is Daniel?”
“Moving east.”
She looked at the screen.
Daniel was running.
Richard was on the ground.
Claire stood before anyone could stop her.
“Colonel!”
She ran.
The night air hit her face.
She crossed the open space as tactical personnel secured the building.
Daniel had reached a fence.
“Stop!”
He turned.
Their eyes met.
For one second neither moved.
He looked at her uniform.
Then at the insignia.
“You're Claire.”
She stopped.
“How do you know me?”
He didn't answer.
“Daniel?”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
Claire felt tears burn her eyes.
“I've been looking for you my whole life.”
“You didn't know I existed.”
“That wasn't my choice.”
Daniel looked toward the building.
“Go to your father.”
“What happened?”
“He'll tell you he did it to protect the family.”
Claire shook her head.
“He says that about everything.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then his expression broke.
“He didn't protect you.”
“What did he do?”
“He used you.”
Claire stared at him.
“For what?”
Daniel looked toward the tactical team.
“Your career.”
“My career?”
“He needed someone he could point to inside the Army.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Everything your father did was about access.”
“Access to what?”
“People.”
Claire's mind raced.
“My clearance?”
“Your assignments.”
“My deployments?”
“Your reports.”
She took a step back.
“No.”
“He couldn't get those things directly.”
“So he manipulated me?”
“He manipulated everyone.”
Claire's voice tightened.
“Why did he hate me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“He didn't.”
That answer hurt more than she expected.
“He feared you.”
“Why?”
“Because you were the only one in the family who became something he couldn't control.”
A shout came from behind them.
“Colonel!”
Claire turned.
Richard was being escorted out.
His clothes were dirty.
His face was cut.
When he saw Daniel, his expression changed.
“Claire, stay away from him.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Still doing it.”
Richard glared.
“Don't talk to her.”
Claire stepped between them.
“You don't get to tell me who I can talk to.”
Richard stared at his daughter.
“You have no idea what he's done.”
Claire's voice became cold.
“And I know exactly what you have.”
Richard said nothing.
“The trust. The shell company. Sloane. Redstone.”
His face paled.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I was trying to keep you safe.”
“By hiding my brother?”
“Yes.”
“By using my Army career?”
Richard stopped.
Claire's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Because he was supposed to disappear.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
Daniel answered instead.
“Because I know what happened to our mother.”
Richard's face hardened.
“Enough.”
Claire turned to Daniel.
“What happened to Mom?”
Richard stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Claire raised a hand.
“Not another word.”
Her father stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
“She wasn't sick.”
Claire's world tilted.
“What?”
“She didn't die from the heart condition they told you about.”
Richard looked away.
Claire's voice broke.
“What happened?”
Daniel said quietly:
“She found the records.”
“Which records?”
“The money.”
“What money?”
“The money our father was moving through Sloane.”
Claire looked at Richard.
Her father said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“She was going to expose him.”
Claire felt the night disappear around her.
“Did Dad kill her?”
Richard's expression shattered.
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“No. I didn't.”
“Then what happened?”
Richard looked older than Claire had ever seen him.
“She was killed.”
“By whom?”
He closed his eyes.
“We never found out.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You never wanted to.”
Claire looked between them.
“Why was Daniel hidden?”
Richard answered.
“Because the people who killed her were still looking for him.”
Claire frowned.
“Why would they care about a child?”
Daniel spoke softly.
“Because our mother left me something.”
“What?”
“A copy of the ledger.”
Silence.
Claire understood.
“The financial records.”
Daniel nodded.
“The original disappeared.”
Claire stared at him.
“Where is the copy?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“I gave it to someone.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Claire's heart pounded.
“But she died.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She never had it.”
Claire felt a chill.
“Then who does?”
Before he could answer, the tactical commander shouted from the building.
“Colonel Bennett!”
Claire turned.
A soldier held up a metal case.
“We found this hidden under the floor.”
Claire approached.
The case bore an old family seal.
Richard saw it.
His face went white.
“No.”
Claire opened it.
Inside was a stack of documents.
And on top lay a handwritten note.
Claire's name was written on it in a handwriting she recognized instantly.
Her mother's.
May you like
The note contained only one sentence.
Claire, when you finally find this, do not trust your father.
