Chapter 28 - The Grandmother

Nobody fired.

Nobody breathed.

Claire stared at the woman standing ten feet away.

She looked too young.

Impossible.

Yet there was no mistaking the eyes.

The same pale gray eyes as Elizabeth.

The same narrow jaw.

The same expression Claire had seen in old photographs.

“Miriam.”

The woman smiled.

“Yes.”

Elizabeth raised her weapon.

“Don't move.”

Miriam looked at her.

“You still point first.”

“You're not real.”

Miriam laughed softly.

“Neither is most of what you were taught.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You were born in the seventies.”

Miriam shook her head.

“No.”

She touched the side of her face.

“The woman you knew was my mother.”

Claire stared.

“Then who are you?”

“My daughter.”

Elizabeth's face went white.

Claire turned toward her.

“You have a sister.”

Elizabeth said nothing.

“Mom.”

Elizabeth swallowed.

“Miriam had a second daughter.”

“Why wasn't she ever mentioned?”

“Because she was supposed to be dead.”

The young woman smiled.

“She was.”

Claire looked at her.

“You're not Miriam.”

“No.”

“What is your name?”

The woman answered.

“Evelyn.”

Elizabeth whispered, “Evelyn.”

Claire felt the room spin.

“Then where is Miriam?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Inside the network.”

Noah looked at the central system.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn walked toward the platform.

“She stopped using a physical body years ago.”

Lillian recoiled.

“You're saying she uploaded herself.”

“Partially.”

Claire thought about the synthetic identity.

The memory chamber.

The biological interface.

The bloodline.

It was all connected.

“How long has the network been alive?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Longer than you.”

“That's impossible.”

“Your mother thought so too.”

Elizabeth stepped forward.

“You promised me you wouldn't come back.”

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

“You promised me you would never interfere.”

“I couldn't keep that promise.”

“Neither could I.”

Claire pointed at the gates.

“You transferred the system.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked directly at Claire.

“You did.”

Claire frowned.

“No.”

“You touched the gate.”

“So did Lillian.”

“But the system recognized you.”

“Why?”

“Because you weren't separated from the bloodline.”

Claire stared.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn answered.

“You inherited more than access.”

Lillian whispered, “What did she inherit?”

Evelyn looked at both sisters.

“Authority.”

Claire felt cold.

“But you said bloodline was required.”

“Bloodline is the door.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Choice is the key.”

Noah stepped forward.

“And now?”

“Now the system belongs to Claire.”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't want it.”

“That doesn't matter.”

“Why?”

“Because it already started listening to you.”

The chamber lights changed.

A display appeared.

CLAIRE BENNETT — ACTIVE AUTHORITY.

Claire stared.

“No.”

The system spoke.

“PRIMARY CUSTODIAN CONFIRMED.”

Claire backed away.

“How do I shut it down?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because you didn't inherit the network.”

Claire frowned.

“Then what did I inherit?”

Evelyn smiled.

“The network inherited you.”

The chamber doors slammed shut.

Elizabeth moved toward Claire.

“Don't listen to her.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Still trying to protect them.”

She pointed toward Richard.

“Tell her what happened to the original custodian.”

Richard lowered his head.

Claire looked at him.

“Dad?”

He whispered.

“There was no original custodian.”

Claire frowned.

“Then who controlled it?”

Richard looked at Elizabeth.

“Your grandmother did.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“Not Miriam.”

Claire turned.

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked at Elizabeth.

“Your mother.”

Claire understood.

“Elizabeth?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She was supposed to inherit it.”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“I rejected it.”

“And they punished you.”

“Yes.”

Claire stared.

“They took Lillian.”

“Yes.”

“And separated me.”

“Yes.”

“And sent everyone after me.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Lillian.

“Then this was all because Mom refused the network.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“It was because she refused to become what they needed.”

Claire looked back.

“What did they need?”

Evelyn's expression softened.

“A ruler.”

Claire almost laughed.

“I'm a colonel.”

“That's not what I mean.”

Evelyn stepped toward her.

“You were trained to command.”

“You were trained to obey.”

“You learned both.”

Claire stared.

Evelyn continued.

“That's why Elizabeth chose you.”

Claire's throat tightened.

“She chose me?”

“Yes.”

“Over Lillian?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at Lillian.

“She chose both of you.”

Lillian whispered, “Then why didn't she tell us?”

“Because if both sisters knew their role, the organization could manipulate you.”

Noah said, “And now?”

Evelyn's eyes moved toward him.

“Now they don't need to.”

The entire chamber vibrated.

Something beneath the floor moved.

Claire looked down.

“What was that?”

Richard's face changed.

“Another level.”

Elizabeth looked horrified.

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes.”

A seam opened in the floor.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Claire stared.

“There is another chamber.”

Evelyn nodded.

“The first.”

Noah looked at the stairs.

“What is down there?”

Evelyn's answer was quiet.

“The founder.”

Claire took a step forward.

“Who?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Your grandfather.”

Claire stopped.

“I thought he died.”

“So did everyone.”

Richard's expression turned pale.

Elizabeth whispered:

“He's been waiting.”

A deep mechanical sound rose from below.

Then a man's voice echoed through the chamber.

“Bring me my granddaughters.”

Claire looked at Lillian.

May you like

And both sisters realized the network had never been the real secret.

The real secret was the family that built it.
