Chapter 13 - The First Brother

The station lights came back on.

Miriam Vale’s body lay motionless on the concrete.

Claire stood over her, still holding the paper.

THE FIRST BROTHER IS NOT DANIEL.

The sentence would not leave her mind.

Daniel watched her carefully.

“What do you think it means?”

“I think my mother was hiding another family secret.”

Richard spoke from behind them.

“She was.”

Claire spun around.

He looked exhausted.

For the first time, he seemed older than she had ever remembered.

“What did you know?”

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

“Daniel wasn't the first child.”

Claire's breath caught.

Daniel stared at him.

“What?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Your mother had a son before Daniel.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You said I was the oldest.”

“I lied.”

Claire's voice sharpened.

“You told us there were only three children.”

Richard didn't answer.

“Dad.”

Richard finally said:

“Your mother gave him up.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“Why?”

“Because she believed he would be safer.”

“From Mercer?”

“From the network.”

Claire's hands trembled.

“What was his name?”

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“He wasn't raised under Elizabeth's name.”

“Then how do you know he existed?”

“Because I saw the adoption papers.”

Claire stared.

“Where?”

“Your mother burned them.”

Daniel looked furious.

“You watched her?”

“She begged me to.”

“Why?”

Richard's voice broke.

“Because someone was looking for the child.”

The station fell silent.

Claire walked closer.

“Who?”

Richard whispered:

“Mercer.”

Daniel stepped away.

“So he knew.”

“He suspected.”

“About me?”

“No.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“About the first child.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Her mother had said there was a brother.

But she had never said Daniel was the first.

A second voice came from the tunnel.

“Because Daniel wasn't.”

Everyone turned.

A man stepped into the station.

Claire raised her weapon.

He raised both hands.

“I don't want to fight you.”

Claire stared.

She knew him.

Not personally.

But from classified personnel records.

Colonel Andrew Keller.

Current deputy director of Army strategic operations.

Ethan stepped in front of Claire.

“You're Mercer’s people.”

Keller looked at him.

“I used to be.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Used to?”

Keller nodded.

“He ordered me to kill your sister.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“Me?”

Keller looked at her.

“Not tonight.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Claire remembered the assignment.

A convoy.

A surveillance mission that had inexplicably been canceled.

A sniper she had never identified.

A security breach that had been blamed on an administrative error.

“You.”

Keller nodded.

“I was on the ridge.”

Claire stared.

“Why didn't you shoot?”

“Because I saw your mother's name in the file.”

Claire swallowed.

“Elizabeth.”

“Yes.”

Keller stepped closer.

“Your mother once saved my life.”

Richard looked at him.

“She was never supposed to know you.”

Keller ignored him.

“The order came from Mercer.”

Claire lowered her weapon slightly.

“What is he?”

Keller's expression became grim.

“Mercer is the operational architect.”

“And the person above him?”

Keller looked at Daniel.

“That's why I came.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.

“This was recovered from a secure archive in Alexandria.”

Claire unfolded it.

At the top was a list of names.

The first was Elizabeth Bennett.

The second was Richard Bennett.

The third was Daniel Bennett.

Then Claire.

Then another name.

Noah Bennett.

Claire's eyes widened.

“Who is Noah?”

Keller looked toward Richard.

Richard said nothing.

Daniel read the page.

Then he stumbled backward.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed to the bottom.

There was a photograph.

A boy.

Maybe five years old.

Dark hair.

A thin scar near his eyebrow.

Claire recognized the face.

It belonged to a man she had met years ago.

A soldier.

Someone she had once trusted.

She whispered his name.

“Noah Mercer.”

Richard looked at her in terror.

“No.”

Keller spoke quietly.

“Not Mercer.”

“Then who?”

Keller answered:

“Noah Bennett.”

Claire's world seemed to stop.

“You're saying the first child was renamed?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Keller looked at Daniel.

“Inside the Army.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“As who?”

Keller did not answer.

Claire’s secure phone suddenly vibrated.

One new message.

COME TO WARD 14.

NO ONE ELSE.

Below it was a photograph.

A hospital corridor.

And a man standing at the end of it.

Claire knew him.

Lieutenant General Samuel Hart.

Her commanding officer.

The man who had mentored her after she returned from Afghanistan.

The man she had trusted with every classified report she had ever written.

Daniel saw the photograph.

His mouth went dry.

“I know him.”

Claire turned.

“How?”

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“That was the man who taught me how to disappear.”

Claire stared at Samuel Hart's photograph.

Keller stepped forward.

“Don't go.”

Claire looked at him.

“He's my commander.”

“That is why you cannot trust him.”

Suddenly the station speakers crackled.

Mercer's voice returned.

“You're getting closer, Claire.”

She looked toward the ceiling.

Mercer continued.

“But you still don't understand the rule.”

“What rule?”

Silence.

Then:

“Every family has a first secret.”

A pause.

“Yours has a first son.”

The speakers died.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“What happens if we find Noah?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“We find out why our mother gave him away.”

Keller nodded.

“And why Mercer spent twenty-five years trying to find him.”

Claire folded the document.

“Where is Ward 14?”

Keller stared at her.

“You're really going.”

“Yes.”

“I won't stop you.”

“Then come with me.”

Keller shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

He looked at his wristwatch.

“Because my orders just changed.”

Claire frowned.

“What orders?”

Keller looked down.

Then his expression drained of color.

“The order says to bring you in alive.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“And if she refuses?”

May you like

Keller looked at Claire.

“Then I am authorized to bring her in by force.”
