Chapter 15 - The Brother's Secret

Daniel could not answer.

Not because he didn't know.

Because he remembered.

Claire could see it in his face.

Something had happened fifteen years earlier.

Something Daniel had buried so deeply that even he had stopped admitting it existed.

“Hart,” Claire said.

Samuel Hart folded his hands behind his back.

“You're asking the wrong person.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“What happened fifteen years ago?”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Daniel.”

He finally looked up.

“I was twenty-four.”

“I know.”

“I had already been working for Mercer for two years.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

Daniel took a breath.

“I found a boy.”

Richard's face went white.

Claire turned toward him.

“You knew?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“Mercer told me I had a recovery assignment.”

“Recovery of what?”

“A person.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Who?”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Noah.”

Silence.

Claire could barely breathe.

“You found him.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Baltimore.”

“Why didn't you bring him back?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“He was fourteen.”

Claire froze.

That timeline worked.

Noah would have been roughly fourteen in 2013.

“What did Mercer want?”

“He wanted Noah alive.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Hart.

“Because Noah knew the access code.”

Claire frowned.

“Access to what?”

Daniel said:

“The first account.”

Hart interrupted.

“Not the first account.”

He looked at Claire.

“The first gate.”

Claire's skin prickled.

“What gate?”

Hart smiled.

“You're asking questions with words you don't yet understand.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then explain them.”

Hart ignored her.

Daniel continued.

“I found Noah in a group home.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Claire felt a wave of relief.

“What happened?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“The next morning the building burned.”

Claire stared.

“How many died?”

“Eleven.”

Claire's hands trembled.

“And Noah?”

“Gone.”

“Did you save him?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

“You abandoned him?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I couldn't find him.”

Hart watched silently.

Claire turned to him.

“You knew.”

Hart nodded.

“You knew Noah was alive.”

“Yes.”

“And you let Daniel believe he failed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Hart looked at her.

“Because he had.”

Daniel flinched.

Claire turned sharply.

“What does that mean?”

Hart's voice remained calm.

“Noah wasn't taken.”

Daniel's face went rigid.

“He left.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“What?”

Hart nodded.

“He chose to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because your brother told him what was coming.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire's mind raced.

“What did you tell him?”

Daniel whispered:

“I told him they were coming for him.”

“And?”

“He asked me if I was one of them.”

“Did you say yes?”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I said I didn't know anymore.”

Claire felt something inside her break.

He had warned Noah.

But not enough.

Not soon enough.

Not safely enough.

Hart walked toward the photographs.

“You don't understand what Noah did next.”

“What?”

“He came back.”

Daniel stared at him.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months after the fire.”

“Where?”

Hart pointed to a photograph.

A young soldier stood beside a military vehicle.

Claire stared.

She knew him.

The name beneath the photo read:

Adrian Cole.

Claire stepped back.

“No.”

Hart nodded.

“Yes.”

“The advisor.”

“The survivor.”

Claire's mind exploded with possibilities.

Adrian Cole was Noah.

Noah had survived under another name.

He had entered the Army.

He had risen through the ranks.

He had become one of the most trusted officers in the country.

And he had been inside Claire's chain of command for years.

Daniel whispered:

“He was the one who recruited me.”

Hart nodded.

“He wanted you close.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to know what Elizabeth had left.”

Claire suddenly understood.

“Me.”

Hart's eyes met hers.

“Yes.”

“He wasn't recruiting Daniel.”

“Not only Daniel.”

“He was searching for me.”

“Yes.”

Richard stumbled backward.

“Elizabeth knew.”

Hart nodded.

“She always knew.”

Claire stared at the photograph.

“So Noah became Adrian Cole.”

“Yes.”

“And Mercer?”

“Mercer worked for him.”

Claire's heart pounded.

“Then why does Mercer command anything?”

Hart gave a faint smile.

“Because Noah lets him think he does.”

The room went silent.

Claire looked toward the locked door.

“Where is Cole now?”

Hart checked his watch.

“Watching you.”

A monitor suddenly turned on.

The screen showed the chapel.

Then the station.

Then Claire entering Fort Meade.

Live feeds.

Every movement.

Every conversation.

Claire stared in horror.

“He's watching us.”

Hart nodded.

“Right now.”

The image changed.

A new camera angle appeared.

A man stood in a control room.

Adrian Cole.

He was older than Claire remembered from briefings, but unmistakable.

He looked directly into a camera.

Then he spoke.

“I know you're watching, Claire.”

Her breathing stopped.

Cole continued.

“You've spent years believing you were protecting the country.”

The screen showed a file.

One word appeared.

BENNETT.

Cole's voice grew quieter.

“You were actually protecting the person who destroyed your mother.”

Claire stepped toward the screen.

“Why?”

Cole looked directly at her.

“Because your mother asked me to.”

Claire froze.

Daniel whispered:

“What?”

Cole continued.

“She knew the organization would survive her.”

Claire shook her head.

“She would never have trusted you.”

Cole smiled.

“She trusted me enough to give me Noah.”

Claire's face went cold.

“No.”

Cole's expression hardened.

“And she trusted me enough to put Daniel where I needed him.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You recruited me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To find Claire.”

Daniel looked devastated.

Cole continued:

“And now that you've opened the archive, she has finally led us to the final gate.”

The screen went black.

A second later, a countdown appeared.

09:59.

09:58.

Claire looked at Hart.

“What is that?”

Hart's face had become pale.

“The archive timer.”

“For what?”

Hart whispered:

“Ten minutes until the first account opens.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“And what happens then?”

May you like

Hart's answer was barely audible.

“Every secret your mother buried becomes public.”
