Chapter 26 - The Woman Who Left

Claire had imagined seeing her mother again a thousand different ways.
She had imagined anger.
Tears.
Accusations.
An explanation.
She had never imagined Elizabeth walking into an underground chamber with gray in her hair and exhaustion in her eyes, looking at Claire as if she were afraid to touch her own child.
Claire stared.
“You're alive.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“For now.”
Claire's throat tightened.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“About Lillian.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think you abandoned me.”
Elizabeth's eyes filled.
“I thought it would keep you alive.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You don't get to decide that.”
Elizabeth lowered her head.
“No.”
Lillian stood several feet away.
She was trembling.
“You left me too.”
Elizabeth turned.
Her face crumpled.
“No.”
“You did.”
“I was trying to get you back.”
“You never came.”
“I came.”
“Then why didn't I know?”
“Because every time I got close, they moved you.”
Lillian's voice cracked.
“Did you watch me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hear me beg?”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Lillian stepped backward.
“And you did nothing.”
Elizabeth whispered, “I did everything.”
Claire couldn't take it anymore.
“Stop.”
Both women looked at her.
Claire pointed toward the chamber.
“Explain the override.”
Elizabeth looked toward the four-letter door.
“It was never designed to kill either of you.”
Richard frowned.
“Then why the substitution warning?”
“Because someone altered the final protocol.”
Vale's voice came through the chamber speakers.
“Because someone had to.”
Claire spun.
“Vale.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“He's inside the system,” Noah said.
Elizabeth nodded.
“Marcus was one of the original architects.”
Claire looked at Elizabeth.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You trusted him.”
“I trusted his oath.”
Adrian entered the chamber.
“He broke it twenty years ago.”
Vale's voice laughed softly.
“You all still think this is about loyalty.”
The gates began rotating.
A low vibration filled the chamber.
Claire felt it in her bones.
“What is happening?”
Elizabeth stepped toward the control platform.
“The network is synchronizing.”
“Why?”
“Because the three gates have been given a single command.”
“What command?”
Elizabeth looked at Claire.
“Transfer ownership.”
Claire stared.
“To whom?”
“The person who opens the fourth door.”
Lillian stepped forward.
“And if nobody does?”
Elizabeth's voice became quiet.
“Then the system chooses.”
Claire looked at the three gates.
“Chooses who?”
“Whichever bloodline it identifies as dominant.”
Lillian looked at Claire.
“They'll make you fight me.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
A screen came alive.
Historical files appeared.
Elizabeth and Richard.
Young.
Standing beside a laboratory table.
On the table were two infant cribs.
Claire's birth record appeared.
Then Lillian's.
Then another document.
Claire leaned closer.
“What is that?”
Elizabeth answered.
“The original bloodline protocol.”
Claire read the text.
Two children.
One primary.
One reserve.
Claire looked at her mother.
“What does reserve mean?”
Elizabeth swallowed.
“It means the organization considered one of you replaceable.”
Lillian whispered.
“Me.”
“No,” Elizabeth said.
“Then Claire.”
Elizabeth's voice broke.
“Neither.”
A different file opened.
It contained an old photograph.
A young Elizabeth holding both babies.
Richard stood beside her.
Behind them stood Adrian.
And behind Adrian stood Marcus Vale.
Claire stared.
“This photograph was taken before we were separated.”
“Yes.”
“How long did I stay with Lillian?”
“Three months.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“Then you gave me away.”
“No.”
“Who took me?”
Richard looked away.
Claire noticed.
Her heart dropped.
“Dad.”
He couldn't meet her eyes.
Elizabeth closed hers.
“I did.”
Claire froze.
“You?”
Elizabeth's voice trembled.
“I placed you with another family.”
“Why?”
“To break the bloodline pattern.”
Claire stared.
“You gave me away to protect Lillian?”
“I gave you a life outside the network.”
Claire's anger was immediate.
“You stole my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You stole my sister.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my childhood.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire's voice became dangerously quiet.
“And then you want me to save your system.”
Elizabeth looked directly at her.
“No.”
“What?”
“I want you to destroy mine.”
Silence.
Noah looked at the gates.
“What happens after destruction?”
Elizabeth replied, “The network dies.”
“And the people protected by it?”
“They become exposed.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then thousands of innocent people could be killed.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“So destroying it isn't a victory.”
“No.”
“Then what is?”
Elizabeth stared at the door marked CHOICE.
“Building something that can replace it.”
Claire frowned.
“You want me to rebuild it.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“You and Lillian.”
Claire shook her head.
“We don't know how.”
“You were designed to.”
Lillian looked horrified.
“That isn't who I am.”
Elizabeth walked toward her.
“I know.”
“And I don't want it.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you asking?”
“Because they are coming.”
The chamber lights changed.
Security doors around the room opened.
Soldiers poured in.
But these weren't Vale's troops.
They wore no insignia.
No nation.
No unit.
Just the same black symbol Claire had seen throughout the investigation.
The original network.
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Now.”
The firefight exploded.
Claire pulled Lillian behind cover.
Noah fired over the railing.
Ethan and Daniel took positions near the elevator.
Richard crawled toward the control panel.
Elizabeth moved beside Claire.
“Listen to me.”
Claire shouted over the gunfire.
“What?”
“The system has one weakness.”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
“It recognizes family.”
“That's not a weakness.”
“It is when family stops obeying.”
Elizabeth pointed toward the three gates.
“You don't have to destroy them.”
“What then?”
“Disconnect them.”
“How?”
“Together.”
Claire looked at Lillian.
Lillian looked back.
Two sisters.
One secret.
One impossible choice.
Claire ran toward the center platform.
Lillian followed.
The gates began spinning faster.
A voice announced:
“PRIMARY CANDIDATE IDENTIFIED.”
Claire.
“SECONDARY CANDIDATE IDENTIFIED.”
Lillian.
“SELECTION BEGINS.”
The chamber floor opened.
A platform rose between them.
A black chair waited.
Claire stared.
“What is that?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“The choice.”
Noah shouted from behind them.
“Claire!”
She turned.
A soldier had Noah at gunpoint.
The soldier spoke into a radio.
“Primary secured.”
Claire froze.
May you like
The man smiled.
Then he pulled the trigger.
