Chapter 30 - The Door That Should Never Open

Claire searched the chamber until her hands bled.
She searched behind the gates.
Under the platform.
Inside the control room.
There was no sign of Lillian.
No blood.
No weapon.
No footprints.
Just an empty space where her sister had been standing.
“No.”
Claire turned toward the system.
“Bring her back.”
The machine gave no answer.
“Bring her back!”
The lights flickered.
A single line appeared.
SECONDARY BLOODLINE: TRANSFERRED.
Claire stared.
“Transferred where?”
No response.
Noah approached.
“Claire.”
“Don't.”
“We'll find her.”
“Everyone says that.”
He stopped.
Claire looked at the empty platform.
“First it was Mom.”
“Then Richard.”
“Then Lillian.”
“And every time I trust someone, they disappear.”
Noah's voice softened.
“Not me.”
She looked at him.
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because I finally understand what Elizabeth was trying to do.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
“She didn't want you to destroy the network.”
“Then what did she want?”
“She wanted you to expose it.”
Claire frowned.
“Difference?”
“If you destroy it, everyone blames the collapse.”
“And if I expose it?”
“They see who built it.”
Claire looked toward Thomas.
He was gone.
So was Evelyn.
Only Elizabeth and Adrian remained.
Claire turned to her mother.
“Where did they take Lillian?”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Claire's anger returned.
“You always say that.”
“This time it's true.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“There is one place.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Where?”
“The original archive.”
Elizabeth's face hardened.
“No.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
“Then don't say it.”
Claire stared at her mother.
“Tell me.”
Elizabeth looked exhausted.
“The archive isn't a place.”
Claire frowned.
“What is it?”
“A person.”
Silence.
Noah spoke.
“Lillian.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Claire.
“You.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“The archive was designed to migrate.”
“Into a human?”
“Into a mind.”
Claire felt sick.
Adrian added, “Thomas wanted a living archive.”
Claire thought of the synthetic woman.
The memory chamber.
The gates.
The system recognizing her.
She whispered, “Me.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“You weren't born to command the network.”
“You were born to remember it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Every strange dream.
Every unexplained memory.
Every moment when a place felt familiar.
She had always thought it was intuition.
It wasn't.
It was data.
Stored somewhere inside her.
The network hadn't chosen her tonight.
It had recognized her.
Claire opened her eyes.
“Then how do I get Lillian back?”
Elizabeth stepped closer.
“There is another gate.”
Claire stared.
“You said three.”
“There were always four.”
Adrian shook his head.
“The fourth was never supposed to be used.”
“What is it?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“Witness.”
Claire looked confused.
“What does it do?”
“It allows the system to display everything it has hidden.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Everything?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Every crime. Every name. Every order. Every betrayal.”
Ethan frowned.
“And who controls it?”
“No one.”
Claire understood.
“If the witness gate opens, the truth becomes permanent.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why they took Lillian.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“They need her to open it.”
Claire turned toward the dark corridor.
“Then we get her.”
Noah stepped beside her.
“How?”
Adrian answered.
“Below the first chamber.”
Claire looked at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Of course.”
Adrian didn't defend himself.
“The route is dangerous.”
“We'll take it.”
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Your father.”
Claire froze.
“Richard?”
Adrian nodded.
“He wasn't transferred.”
“What does that mean?”
“He was absorbed.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Into the network.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Claire whispered, “Can he come back?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Not unless someone pulls him out.”
“How?”
“The witness gate.”
Claire understood.
To save Richard, she had to open the truth.
To save Lillian, she had to open the truth.
To stop Thomas, she had to open the truth.
Everything led to the same door.
The fourth gate.
They moved through the chamber.
At the back was a wall Claire had not noticed before.
A small brass plate was embedded in the concrete.
It matched the brass key she had carried all night.
Claire inserted it.
The wall opened.
A staircase descended.
Cold air rose from below.
Noah looked down.
“How far?”
Adrian answered.
“Far enough.”
Claire stepped onto the first stair.
Then she heard a voice.
“Claire.”
She stopped.
Lillian.
She turned.
The corridor was empty.
“Lillian?”
Nothing.
Then the voice came again.
“Don't come down.”
Claire looked at Elizabeth.
Her mother had gone pale.
“That's not Lillian.”
Claire's heart raced.
“How do you know?”
“Because she's afraid.”
“Of what?”
Elizabeth whispered.
“The person who is with her.”
Claire looked down the staircase.
“Who?”
A man's voice answered from the darkness.
“Me.”
The lights along the stairs came on one by one.
At the bottom stood Richard.
Claire froze.
He looked exactly the same.
No wound.
No blood.
No machine.
Just her father.
Alive.
“Dad?”
He smiled.
“Hello, Claire.”
Noah raised his weapon.
Adrian raised his too.
Elizabeth stepped backward.
Richard looked at all of them.
Then he said something that made Claire's blood run cold.
“Lillian is alive.”
Claire ran down two steps.
“Where is she?”
Richard pointed deeper into the darkness.
“She is waiting for you.”
Claire stopped.
“Why?”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Because she finally remembered who she is.”
A second voice echoed from the chamber below.
Lillian.
But this time there was something different in it.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Authority.
“Claire.”
Claire stepped down another stair.
Her sister spoke again.
“Come alone.”
Noah grabbed Claire's arm.
“Don't.”
Lillian answered from below.
“If you bring anyone with you, Richard dies.”
Claire looked at her father.
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
Then he whispered:
“She isn't asking.”
“She is ordering you.”
Claire slowly raised her head.
The lights below revealed a massive circular chamber.
At its center stood Lillian.
And behind her stood a man Claire had never seen before.
He wore an old military uniform.
His hair was white.
His face was scarred.
And he was holding a photograph of two newborn girls.
Claire stared.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
“I am the reason your mother disappeared.”
Elizabeth whispered his name.
“No.”
The man looked at Claire.
“Ask me who your real father is.”
Claire turned toward Richard.
Her father looked away.
The stranger smiled.
“Now you understand.”
The fourth gate began to open behind him.
And across every screen in the chamber, a single sentence appeared:
WITNESS GATE: BEGINNING ACTIVATION.
Claire took another step.
Then the stranger said the one thing she had spent her entire life afraid to hear.
“Richard Bennett is not your father.”
The lights went black.
May you like
Then Lillian screamed.
And the fourth gate opened completely.
