Chapter 29 - The Founder

The voice beneath the chamber did not sound old.
It sounded patient.
That was somehow worse.
Claire stood at the top of the stairs, staring into darkness.
Lillian moved beside her.
“Do you want to go down there?”
Claire answered honestly.
“No.”
Lillian looked at her.
“Me neither.”
Noah stepped beside them.
“Then don't.”
Claire shook her head.
“If we leave, whatever is down there stays in control.”
Adrian looked toward Elizabeth.
“She has to know.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire turned.
“Know what?”
Elizabeth struggled to speak.
“Your grandfather wasn't the founder.”
Claire frowned.
Evelyn looked irritated.
“Elizabeth.”
“No.”
Elizabeth raised her voice.
“She deserves the truth.”
Claire stared at her mother.
“Who was he?”
Elizabeth swallowed.
“His name was Thomas Bennett.”
“That was Dad's father.”
“Yes.”
“He was an intelligence officer.”
“Publicly.”
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
“What did he actually do?”
“He built the first network.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elizabeth looked toward the stairs.
“After a war, he became convinced governments were too unstable to preserve critical intelligence.”
“So he created a private system.”
“He created a memory system.”
Claire stared.
“What is the difference?”
“The difference is who decides what survives.”
A man's voice echoed from below.
“Exactly.”
Footsteps began climbing.
Everyone raised their weapons.
An elderly man appeared.
White hair.
Dark coat.
No uniform.
He looked directly at Claire.
Then Lillian.
He smiled.
“My granddaughters.”
Claire's skin crawled.
“You're Thomas.”
“Yes.”
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“You should be dead.”
Thomas smiled.
“Many years ago, I was.”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
“My granddaughter has explained the second layer.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Not everything.”
Thomas returned his gaze to Claire.
“You want to know what the network really is.”
Claire raised her weapon.
“Yes.”
Thomas looked pleased.
“Then ask.”
“Why were we born?”
Thomas's smile disappeared.
“To create the first inheritable intelligence architecture.”
Claire's face hardened.
“You mean us.”
“Yes.”
“Lillian was born to access the system.”
“And you were born to command it.”
Claire felt sick.
“You planned this before we were born.”
“Decades before.”
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“I tried to stop him.”
Thomas looked at her.
“You tried to save your daughters.”
“Yes.”
“You failed.”
Elizabeth flinched.
Claire stepped between them.
“Don't talk to her like that.”
Thomas smiled.
“You have her temper.”
“I have my own.”
“Perhaps.”
Lillian spoke.
“Why did you take me?”
Thomas looked at her.
“You were the compatible interface.”
“You mean you used me.”
“Yes.”
Lillian's eyes filled.
Claire moved closer to her.
Thomas continued.
“Your sister had a stronger command response.”
Claire shook her head.
“I was a child.”
“Exactly.”
Noah looked disgusted.
“You engineered two girls to inherit a machine.”
Thomas shrugged.
“Humans engineer children for less important things every day.”
Noah took one step toward him.
Adrian stopped him.
“Don't.”
Thomas looked at Noah.
“You're Adrian's brother.”
Noah stiffened.
Thomas smiled.
“You both served the family.”
Claire turned.
“Why does everyone keep talking like the family is a government?”
Thomas answered.
“It was never a government.”
“What was it?”
“A dynasty.”
Claire felt the word hit harder than a bullet.
Thomas continued.
“Governments change.”
“Families remain.”
“The network was built to outlive nations.”
Claire looked at Lillian.
“And we were supposed to inherit it.”
“Yes.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“And what happens when we refuse?”
Thomas looked at the gates.
“Then I activate the contingency.”
Evelyn's expression changed.
“Thomas.”
He ignored her.
A deep alarm sounded.
Screens appeared.
Across the country, classified records began unlocking.
Claire stared.
“What did you do?”
Thomas smiled.
“I gave you a choice.”
“You're exposing everyone.”
“Exactly.”
He looked at Claire.
“Stop me.”
Claire stared.
“You're forcing me.”
“Of course.”
Lillian whispered, “He's using people as hostages.”
Thomas nodded.
“Finally, someone understands.”
Elizabeth stepped forward.
“There has to be another way.”
Thomas laughed.
“There is always another way.”
He looked at Claire.
“You.”
Claire's pulse jumped.
“What?”
“Assume control.”
“No.”
“Then watch the system burn.”
Thomas pressed a button.
A timer appeared.
ONE HOUR.
Claire stared.
“One hour until what?”
“The network publishes every protected record.”
Daniel shouted, “You can't!”
Thomas didn't even look at him.
“Your daughter can.”
Claire looked at the timer.
58:42.
57:41.
She felt everyone's eyes on her.
This was exactly what the system wanted.
A choice framed as sacrifice.
Control or chaos.
Power or blood.
Claire looked at Lillian.
“We don't accept the rules.”
Lillian nodded.
“What do we do instead?”
Claire remembered her mother's words.
Choice is the key.
She walked toward the central platform.
Thomas smiled.
“At last.”
Claire ignored him.
She looked at the three gates.
Then at the new display.
PRIMARY CUSTODIAN ACTIVE.
She placed both hands on the platform.
“I don't accept ownership.”
The system paused.
“What are you doing?” Thomas demanded.
Claire continued.
“I revoke inheritance.”
The chamber lights flickered.
Thomas moved toward her.
“Stop.”
“I reject authority.”
The system began flashing.
AUTHORITY CONFLICT.
Lillian stepped beside Claire.
“I reject inheritance too.”
The display changed.
DUAL REJECTION.
Thomas shouted.
“No!”
The gates began spinning backward.
Evelyn grabbed Thomas.
“What did you do?”
Claire stared at the screen.
“I'm not sure.”
The system spoke.
“CONFLICT RESOLUTION REQUIRED.”
Thomas tore free.
“Then resolve it!”
A new message appeared.
TRANSFER CANDIDATE AVAILABLE.
Claire frowned.
“Who?”
The system displayed one name.
RICHARD BENNETT.
Everyone turned.
Richard went pale.
“No.”
Claire stared at her father.
“Dad?”
Thomas smiled.
“The man who helped build the modern network.”
Richard shook his head.
“I never wanted it.”
“But you were compatible.”
Elizabeth whispered, “Richard.”
He backed away.
“I can't.”
Claire stepped toward him.
“You knew.”
“I knew enough.”
“You could have stopped this.”
“I tried.”
“Then why did you let Mom carry everything?”
Richard's eyes filled.
“Because I thought I could protect you by keeping the truth buried.”
Claire's voice cracked.
“You couldn't.”
“I know.”
The system spoke again.
TRANSFER IN TEN MINUTES.
Richard looked at his daughters.
Then at Elizabeth.
Then at Claire.
He made a decision.
He walked to the platform.
“No.”
Elizabeth grabbed him.
“Richard.”
He smiled at her.
“You spent twenty-five years trying to save them.”
“I can still do it.”
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“Let me save you now.”
Claire shook her head.
“Dad, don't.”
He placed his hand against the scanner.
The system accepted him.
CUSTODIAN TRANSFER INITIATED.
Claire screamed.
“Stop!”
Richard looked at her.
“Remember one thing.”
“What?”
“You were never forgotten.”
The chamber exploded with white light.
When Claire opened her eyes, Richard was gone.
Not dead.
Not there.
Just gone.
And the system displayed one final message.
CUSTODIAN ACCEPTED.
Then another.
SECONDARY BLOODLINE LOCATED.
LILLIAN BENNETT.
UNKNOWN STATUS.
May you like
Claire looked at her sister.
Lillian was gone.
