Chapter 24 - The Second Daughter

Claire stared through the shattered doorway.

For one impossible second, she thought she was looking into a mirror.

Then the figure inside the glass moved.

Not a reflection.

A woman.

Her face had Claire's eyes.

Her nose.

Her mouth.

Even the tiny scar above her eyebrow.

Lillian stood several feet away, watching Claire's reaction.

“She isn't you,” Lillian said.

Claire could barely speak.

“Then who is she?”

Lillian looked toward the glass.

“I don't know.”

Noah moved toward the machine.

“Don't touch it.”

Claire caught his shoulder.

“Why?”

“It isn't a prison.”

“What is it?”

Lillian answered.

“A memory.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lillian stepped closer.

“They put memories into her.”

Claire stared at the figure.

“Whose?”

Lillian looked at her.

“Yours.”

Claire felt sick.

Noah turned toward Adrian.

“You knew.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Not this.”

Claire pointed at the machine.

“They copied me?”

“Not exactly,” Lillian said.

She touched the glass.

“They copied what the system knew about you.”

Claire's mind raced.

“How?”

“Every medical record. Every deployment. Every interview. Every biometric scan. Every security test.”

Lillian's voice remained calm.

“They built a synthetic identity.”

Claire looked at Vale.

“Why?”

“Because the network required a Bennett authorization.”

Claire stared.

“But I am here.”

“Yes.”

“Then why build another?”

Vale lowered his eyes.

“Because they were preparing for your death.”

Silence.

Claire felt something tear inside her.

“They expected me to die.”

“They expected your mother to force you into the chamber.”

Noah stepped closer.

“Elizabeth knew.”

Vale nodded.

“She always knew.”

Claire turned toward Lillian.

“How did you survive?”

Lillian hesitated.

“Someone helped me.”

“Who?”

“Richard.”

Claire's breath caught.

“My father?”

“He came back for me.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Lillian looked at the floor.

“That I'd remember.”

Claire didn't understand.

“Remember what?”

Lillian looked at her.

“You.”

Claire's voice broke.

“When did we meet?”

“When we were babies.”

Claire shook her head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Lillian walked to a cabinet and removed a small box.

Inside was a faded hospital bracelet.

LILLIAN BENNETT.

Beside it was another.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

The dates were the same.

Claire looked at the two bracelets.

“The birth certificate says I was born three months before her.”

Lillian nodded.

“The records were changed.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

“To make the organization believe I was born later.”

“Then when were we born?”

Lillian answered quietly.

“Same day.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Lillian looked at Claire with tears in her eyes.

“They took me twelve hours after we were born.”

Claire stepped backward.

“What did Mom do?”

“She fought them.”

“Did she ever stop?”

“No.”

Claire closed her eyes.

All the lies.

All the disappearances.

All the years.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

She had been fighting for both daughters.

Then a gunshot echoed down the corridor.

Everyone ducked.

Adrian drew his weapon.

“That's Vale's men.”

Vale shook his head.

“Not mine.”

The lights changed.

A red symbol appeared on the wall.

THIRD GATE ONLINE.

Noah stared.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

He stepped toward the symbol.

“They activated Gate Three.”

“What does that mean?”

Noah's voice was barely audible.

“The system has chosen a successor.”

Claire looked at Lillian.

“No.”

Lillian shook her head.

“Not me.”

Claire pointed to herself.

“Me?”

Lillian looked toward the machine.

“No.”

Claire frowned.

“Then who?”

A voice behind them answered.

“Me.”

Everyone turned.

Richard stood in the doorway.

His face was bloodied.

One sleeve was torn.

He held a small black device.

Claire raised her weapon.

“Don't move.”

Richard looked at her.

“I don't blame you.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Lillian was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Mom was alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the chamber.”

“Yes.”

Claire's voice trembled.

“And you let me believe you were just an accountant.”

Richard gave a sad smile.

“Because your mother needed one person in your life to look harmless.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“You were my father.”

“I still am.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because if I had, they would have killed you.”

Claire stared.

Richard held up the device.

“They've already activated the last layer.”

Lillian stepped backward.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at her.

His face broke.

“Lillian.”

Claire stared.

He called her daughter.

Not subject.

Not asset.

Daughter.

Richard looked between the two women.

“I failed both of you.”

Claire whispered, “What is that device?”

“The manual override.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“It can shut down the network.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then do it.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Richard looked toward the machine.

“Because the override requires a living authorization.”

“Me?”

“No.”

He looked at Lillian.

“Her.”

Lillian went pale.

Claire stepped between them.

“You said she was the key.”

Richard nodded.

“She is.”

“What happens if she uses it?”

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“She dies.”

Claire froze.

Lillian looked at her.

“That's why they protected me.”

Claire finally understood.

Not because Lillian was valuable.

Because she was expendable.

She was raised as a key that was never supposed to survive the final lock.

“No,” Claire said.

Richard shook his head.

“There is another way.”

“What?”

“Someone else can take the authorization.”

Noah stared.

“Who?”

Richard looked directly at Claire.

“The system can accept a substitute.”

Claire's blood went cold.

“What substitute?”

Richard pressed the black device.

A voice filled the room.

Elizabeth.

“If you are hearing this, I failed to stop them.”

Claire's eyes closed.

Her mother continued.

“But I left one option.”

The machine began to glow.

Lillian screamed.

Claire turned.

The woman inside the glass opened her eyes.

They were Claire's eyes.

Elizabeth's voice whispered through the speakers.

“Claire, forgive me.”

A countdown appeared on the wall.

05:00

04:59

04:58

Richard looked at Claire.

“The substitute must enter.”

“Enter what?”

“The memory chamber.”

Claire stared at the glass.

“What happens inside?”

Richard answered.

“You become the system.”

The countdown reached four minutes.

Then every door in the facility opened simultaneously.

Armed personnel flooded the corridors.

And from somewhere above them, Adrian shouted:

“Claire! Don't let them put you in there!”
