Chapter 16 - The Final Gate

Nine minutes.

That was all they had.

Claire watched the countdown.

09:41.

09:40.

The room seemed to shrink around her.

“What happens when the account opens?” she asked.

Hart remained silent.

Claire grabbed him by the collar.

“What happens?”

Hart finally looked at her.

“The organization collapses.”

“That sounds good.”

“It isn't.”

“Why?”

“Because the first account contains identities.”

Claire stopped.

“Whose identities?”

“People.”

“Names.”

Hart nodded.

“Judges. Generals. Ministers. executives. intelligence officers. bankers. contractors.”

Claire understood.

“And if the archive becomes public?”

“Governments will fall.”

Claire stared at the countdown.

09:15.

“What are you afraid of?”

Hart spoke quietly.

“War.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You're telling us Mercer built a network that powerful?”

“No.”

Hart looked at Claire.

“Elizabeth did.”

Claire stared.

“My mother?”

“She discovered it.”

“She created it?”

“No.”

Hart shook his head.

“She found the original system.”

Claire remembered Sloane's words.

The organization wasn't built around money.

It was built around access.

Hart continued.

“Your mother realized the system existed before she married your father.”

Richard looked away.

Claire noticed.

“Dad?”

Richard didn't answer.

“Did Mom know about it before you met?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she marry you?”

Richard laughed weakly.

“She thought I could help her dismantle it.”

“But you didn't.”

“I tried.”

Claire stepped away.

“You became part of it.”

Richard looked at her.

“I became useful to it.”

Daniel stared at the countdown.

“Eight minutes.”

Keller moved toward a terminal.

“There's a way to stop the archive.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

“Remove the authentication key.”

“From where?”

Keller looked at the brass key.

“That's the key.”

Claire stared at it.

“This?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hasn't Mercer taken it?”

Keller shook his head.

“Because only Elizabeth's bloodline can use it.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“So I can't.”

“No.”

Claire understood.

“Only me.”

Hart nodded.

“You're the last authenticated heir.”

Claire looked at Richard.

“Mom designed this around me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard answered:

“Because she knew you'd become the person she couldn't.”

“What does that mean?”

Richard swallowed.

“She believed you would refuse power.”

Claire's expression hardened.

“Unlike her.”

Richard didn't answer.

The countdown reached 07:21.

Suddenly the lights flickered.

A voice came over the room speakers.

Adrian Cole.

“Claire.”

She looked upward.

“You're wasting time.”

“Show yourself.”

“I've been showing myself for years.”

“Why did Mom trust you?”

A pause.

“Because I told her I could save Noah.”

Claire's heart clenched.

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

“Then where is he?”

Cole was silent.

“That question is more complicated than you think.”

Claire slammed her hand against the console.

“You're Noah.”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard began to cry.

Claire's voice shook.

“Why did you let us believe you were dead?”

“I never died.”

“You let Daniel think he failed.”

“He needed to believe that.”

“Why?”

“Because if he knew I was alive, they would have killed him.”

“Who?”

“The Custodians.”

Claire looked at Hart.

“You're one of them.”

Hart didn't deny it.

“Yes.”

Claire stepped toward him.

“Were you protecting Noah?”

Hart nodded.

“Then why is he hunting me?”

“Because he believes you have something he needs.”

“The archive.”

“No.”

Claire frowned.

“Then what?”

Hart looked at her.

“You.”

The lights went out again.

This time the emergency doors opened.

Soldiers flooded the room.

Keller raised his weapon.

“Don't move!”

The soldiers aimed at Claire.

At Hart.

At Daniel.

One officer stepped forward.

“Colonel Bennett, step away from the table.”

Claire recognized him.

General Jonathan Mercer.

He entered wearing a dark uniform, older than in the photograph but unmistakably the same man.

Daniel stared at him.

“You're alive.”

Mercer smiled.

“Barely.”

Claire pointed her weapon at him.

“You recruited my brother.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered Noah's disappearance.”

“No.”

“You killed my mother.”

Mercer's expression hardened.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Mercer looked toward Hart.

Hart's face fell.

Claire understood.

Mercer said quietly:

“Ask him.”

Claire turned.

Hart didn't move.

Mercer continued:

“Your mother was killed because she discovered the Custodians had selected a successor.”

Claire froze.

“Who?”

Mercer looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

“Your mother believed it was Noah.”

Claire's heart raced.

“And she was wrong?”

“Yes.”

Mercer looked directly at Claire.

“The successor was you.”

The room went silent.

Claire shook her head.

“That makes no sense.”

Mercer stepped closer.

“Your mother didn't build the archive for you to expose the organization.”

“Then why?”

“To choose whether to take control of it.”

The countdown hit 05:00.

Claire stared at the screen.

“You're lying.”

Mercer shook his head.

“I wish I were.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why would she make Claire the successor?”

Mercer answered:

“Because only someone who had never been part of the organization could control it without being controlled by it.”

Claire looked at Richard.

He looked destroyed.

“Dad?”

Richard whispered:

“She was right.”

Claire turned toward him.

“What did you know?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“She told me before she died.”

“You knew I was the heir.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because once you knew, they would come for you.”

“They already did.”

Richard broke down.

“I thought I could keep you outside it.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“You didn't.”

The countdown reached 03:52.

Mercer looked at the screen.

“You don't have much time.”

“What happens at zero?”

“The archive doesn't just release files.”

Claire looked at him.

“What else?”

“It sends a command.”

“To whom?”

Mercer answered:

“Everyone.”

A terrible realization crossed Claire's mind.

“What command?”

Mercer stared at her.

“Stand down.”

Claire's face went pale.

“You mean the military?”

“Not just the military.”

“Then who?”

Mercer leaned closer.

“Anyone who carries your mother's mark.”

The countdown reached 03:00.

Then the system flashed.

AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE.

Claire stepped toward the terminal.

The brass key in her hand became warm.

The screen changed.

WELCOME, CLAIRE BENNETT.

Beneath it:

CHOOSE THE FIRST ORDER.

Claire stared.

“What order?”

May you like

Mercer looked at her.

“That's the decision your mother died protecting.”
