Chapter 58 - The Black Vault of the Republic

The polycarbonate barrier slid back with a low, pneumatic groan.
The blast of sub-zero nitrogen air hit me like a physical wall, freezing the sweat on my forehead instantly.
The cylindrical quantum core sat in the center of the vault, hummed with a high-pitched, vibrating frequency that made my teeth ache.
On the console, the timer was down to forty-eight seconds.
**00:48... 00:47... 00:46...**
*"Cross!"* General Vance’s voice burst through my earpiece, broken by severe digital distortion. *"Eleanor has... cardiac arrest! Medics are... initiating CPR! The switch is tripping! You have seconds!"*
I dropped Sterling to the floor and sprinted into the freezing chamber.
The core was encased in a titanium framework, locked down with heavy magnetic clamps.
I pulled the last remaining block of C4 from my vest, but I knew the blast wouldn't just destroy the core—in this enclosed subterranean vault, the concussion wave would liquefy my internal organs instantly.
There was no time to set a remote detonator.
No time to clear the blast radius.
I looked at the primary coolant intake running into the bottom of the cylinder.
A heavy, braided steel hose, pumping liquid nitrogen directly into the processor arrays.
If the coolant flow was severed, the quantum chips would overheat within three seconds, causing an immediate catastrophic thermal meltdown that would fry the circuitry without an explosion.
I reached for the manual bypass valve.
The wheel was locked with a heavy iron padlock.
I drew my Glock, pressed the muzzle directly against the shackle of the lock, and fired.
*SPARK!*
The ricocheting bullet clipped my shoulder armor, but the shattered lock flew off into the darkness.
I grabbed the frozen iron wheel with my bare hands.
The metal was so cold it instantly ripped the outer layer of skin from my palms, searing my flesh with freezing agony.
I ignored the pain.
I threw my entire weight into the turn.
The valve screamed with the screech of rusted threads.
"Turn, you bastard!" I screamed, blood from my torn hands freezing against the iron rim.
**00:15... 00:14... 00:13...**
With a sickening crunch of breaking ice, the valve spun three full rotations.
The high-pressure hiss of liquid nitrogen cut out instantly.
Inside the glass cylinder, the violet light shifted violently to a blinding, angry crimson.
The humming rose to an ear-splitting, mechanical shriek.
Smoke began to pour from the ventilation slats of the server tower.
The screens outside the vault flickered wildly.
The data streams began to stutter, breaking apart into jagged lines of corrupted code.
**00:03... 00:02... 00:01...**
*SYSTEM ERROR: CRITICAL HARDWARE MELTDOWN.*
*TRANSMISSION TERMINATED.*
A brilliant flare of white light illuminated the inside of the cylinder as the processor boards melted into a slag of molten silicon and burnt plastic.
The screens in the main room went completely black.
The deafening roar of the cooling units ground to a sudden, dead halt.
Silence returned to the subterranean bunker.
I collapsed against the frosted wall of the vault, my chest heaving, my breath coming in thick white clouds of vapor.
My hands were bleeding and raw, the skin peeling back to the red muscle beneath.
Through the earpiece, the frantic static suddenly cleared.
*"Cross? Maya, do you copy?!"* Vance’s voice broke through.
I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice.
"The core is destroyed, General," I whispered, closing my eyes. "The protocol has been terminated."
A massive collective cheer erupted over the radio channel from the tactical operations center at Fort Meade.
*"Outstanding work, Colonel,"* Vance said, his voice thick with emotion. *"Outstanding work. Extraction team is entering the north tunnel right now."*
"And Eleanor?" I asked quietly.
A brief pause followed.
*"She’s gone, Maya,"* Vance said gently. *"She flatlined three minutes ago. The medics couldn't bring her back."*
I leaned my head back against the cold steel, feeling nothing.
No victory.
No sorrow.
Only an overwhelming, hollow exhaustion that felt heavier than any bullet wound.
"What about Clara?" I asked, my heart clenching tightly.
*"She’s awake,"* Vance replied, a genuine warmth returning to his tone. *"The enzyme has fully integrated. She’s resting at the secure medical bunker at Raven Rock. She’s asking for her mother."*
A single tear cut through the dirt and soot on my cheek.
"I’m coming, baby," I whispered.
I pushed myself off the floor, stepping out of the frozen vault back into the main control room.
Sterling was still lying where I had dropped him, staring at the dead monitors with vacant, shattered disbelief.
"It's over, Sterling," I said, standing over him.
"You don't understand, Maya," he mumbled, blood dripping from his chin onto his shirt. "You really don't understand what you've done."
"I saved the country from people like you," I replied coldly.
Sterling looked up at me, and to my absolute horror, he began to laugh.
A broken, terrifying sound that echoed off the dead server racks.
May you like
"You didn't stop them, Colonel," he whispered. "You just triggered phase three."
