Chapter 26 - Blood Money and Silver Spoons

The takedown of Richard and Elena had neutralized the immediate threat to my family, but the cancer was far deeper than a domestic betrayal.

Twenty-four hours later, I stood inside the high-security SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) at Fort Meade. On the central holographic projector, bank accounts across Switzerland, Panama, and Singapore were flickering from green to red as the Department of the Treasury's cyber-warfare unit froze thousands of covert corporate assets.

"We cracked Elena's primary server," announced Major David Chen, my chief intelligence analyst. He tapped a glass tablet, bringing up an aerial surveillance photograph of a heavily fortified compound in the remote hills of the Virginia countryside.

"What am I looking at, David?" I asked, sipping black coffee.

"This is the Blackwood Equestrian Estate," Chen said, zooming into the estate's sprawling paddocks and a massive subterranean bunker entrance disguised as an indoor riding arena. "Publicly, it’s owned by a shell corporation belonging to Senator William Sterling—the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee."

My eyes narrowed. Senator Sterling. The very man who had publicly praised my counter-insurgency operations overseas while privately stalling the military budget for domestic security upgrades.

"Sterling wasn't just taking Victor Vance’s campaign contributions," Chen continued, his face grim. "He was the architect. The Russian intelligence connection wasn't a rogue cell; it was a contracted operation. Sterling was using a private mercenary corporation called 'Apex Sovereign' to manufacture a domestic security crisis. By orchestrating a cyber-attack on our early warning grids and blaming it on foreign adversaries, Sterling was positioning himself to pass the Emergency Defense Governance Act."

"A civilian legislative coup," I murmured, the pieces slamming into place with terrifying clarity. "He wanted complete executive authority over the Pentagon’s domestic deployments."

"And there's worse, Colonel," Chen said, glancing nervously at me.

"Out with it, Major."

"Elena Rostova wasn't working alone inside your personal perimeter. When she was captured at Walter Reed, her secondary comm sent an automated distress signal to a private rapid-response unit stationed ten miles outside D.C. They know Victor is compromised. They know Richard signed the confession."

"And they know I’m the one holding the scalpel," I finished.

"Yes, ma'am. Senator Sterling just mobilized Apex Sovereign's primary tactical cadre. They aren't running for the border, Colonel. They're liquidating everyone connected to the paper trail before the federal warrants can be unsealed by the Chief Justice tomorrow morning."

"Where is the transport carrying Victor Vance?" I snapped, dread instantly gripping my chest.

Chen's fingers flew across his keyboard. His screen went dead for two seconds, replaced by a flashing red emergency alert icon.

"Convoy Bravo-Four was routed along Route 50 toward the federal holding facility at Quantico," Chen said, his voice rising in alarm. "They just lost satellite comms in the Bull Run corridor. GPS transponders are offline."

I tossed my coffee cup into the receptacle, my combat instincts taking over instantly.

"Scramble my Quick Reaction Force!" I ordered, pulling my tactical harness from the equipment locker. "Prep the gunships! If they silence Victor Vance, the entire legal case against the Senate conspirators dies with him!"
