Chapter 13 - Safehouse Breach

Eighty miles away, nestled deep in the wooded perimeter of Fort Meade, the storm hammered against the reinforced glass of Safehouse Charlie-4.
Inside, sixty-two-year-old Evelyn Vance sat in an ergonomic armchair, her trembling hands wrapped around a cup of warm chamomile tea. Across the living area, ten-year-old Lily sat on the carpet, coloring a picture of a bald eagle perched atop a mountain. The purple discoloration on Lily's wrist was fading under the medical ointment applied by military doctors, but the psychological flinch remained. Every time the wind rattled the window, the girl's shoulders tensed.
"Mommy promised she’d be back for dinner," Lily said quietly, not looking up from her drawing.
"Your mother keeps her promises, baby," Evelyn replied, though her voice wavered. For years, she had watched her daughter endure Richard’s sneers, watching Amanda quietly bear the insult of being called an 'unemployed burden' or a 'lowly admin clerk' to protect the classified nature of her true service. Evelyn had held Amanda's secret close, even when Richard refused to pay for her insulin and mocked her frailty.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then went dead.
Emergency red backup lights clicked on, bathing the safehouse in a low, sinister crimson glow.
Outside the reinforced steel door, the muted sound of two suppressed gunshots thudded through the air.
Lieutenant Ross burst into the room from the observation vestibule, his assault carbine raised to the low-ready position. "Get behind the kitchen counter! Now!"
"What is happening?!" Evelyn cried, pulling Lily up by the arm and shielding the trembling child with her own frail body.
"Perimeter alert," Ross barked, pressing his radio transmit switch. "Command, this is Charlie-4! We have multiple bogeys on the inner wire! Guard team at Post Alpha is unresponsive! Requesting immediate QRF!"
Only static screamed back over the frequency.
"They're jamming the tactical band," Ross muttered through gritted teeth, checking the digital feed on his wrist monitor. Three masked figures dressed in sterile black assault gear were sweeping through the hallway, moving with the fluid precision of Tier-1 mercenaries.
Lily whimpered, burying her face into her grandmother’s chest. "Daddy said bad men would come if Mommy didn't behave... Is Daddy doing this?"
"No, sweetheart," Evelyn whispered, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks as she stared at the reinforced door. "Your father is a coward. These are the monsters he sold his soul to."
A heavy thermal breach charge hissed as it was slapped onto the steel lock of the outer door. The countdown beeper began its merciless chime.
