Chapter 43 - The Cyanide Ticking

Three hours.

In military logistics, three hours was barely enough time to fuel an aircraft, let alone breach an unmarked, radar-deflecting foreign stealth transport operating in contested airspace off the Atlantic seaboard.

"The local trauma bays are useless," I said, my mind racing through military medical databases at blinding speed. "Sterling wasn't exaggerating. This is a weaponized synthetic peptide designed to target the cellular mitochondria. Standard broad-spectrum antivenoms or antibiotics will only accelerate the vascular collapse. We need the specific synthesizing agent aboard *Volga-One*."

"Colonel, *Volga-One* is a ghost ship," Hicks said, leaning heavily against the stainless steel medical prep table. He pulled out a battered military tablet, swiping through encrypted feeds. "NORAD doesn't have an active track on it because the aircraft is running active electro-magnetic skin-canceling technology. It’s an experimental Russian prototype flown by elite black-budget defectors. They aren’t answering civilian transponders, and if the Pentagon’s compromised leadership gets wind of where it is, they’ll scramble F-22s out of Langley to blow it out of the sky just to destroy the evidence."

"Which means Clara dies with it," my mother spoke from the corner.

Her voice was frail, withered by months of Richard's neglect, but beneath the fragility was the sharp, penetrating intellect of a woman who had once served as a senior cryptographer for Naval Intelligence. She looked at me, her blue eyes piercing through the dimness.

"Richard didn't sell those safehouse schematics to strangers, Maya," she said quietly. "He doesn't have the brains or the courage to negotiate with foreign shadow contractors. Someone carried him by the hand. Someone promised him immunity."

Right on cue, the secondary tactical comms radio on the workbench let out an unprompted, high-priority ping.

It was an open-frequency satellite hook, bypassing the local cellular towers completely. The incoming caller ID displayed a single, mocking phrase: *DOMESTIC ASSET 01*.

Hicks instantly raised his sidearm toward the radio as if it were a live grenade. "Colonel... that’s an internal military intelligence handshake. It’s coming from inside the Beltway."

I reached out, my fingers steady as steel, and clicked the speakerphone toggle.

"Speak," I commanded.

A ragged, trembling breath came through the small speaker. Then, a voice I knew all too well—a voice that had whined across our kitchen table about missed paychecks, a voice that had falsely accused me of abandoning our marriage while I bled for this country.

*"M-Maya...?"*

Richard.

"Where are you, Richard?" I asked, my tone flat, terrifyingly devoid of any emotion.

*"Listen to me, you have to listen to me!"* Richard shrieked, his voice laced with the hysteria of a cornered rat. *"You don't understand what kind of people these are! They told me they were just auditing your accounts! They told me you were involved in illegal black ops and that I was going to be indicted as an accessory if I didn't cooperate! They were going to put me in federal prison for life, Maya!"*

"You sold the coordinates to your daughter's safehouse," I said slowly. "You let armed hit teams kick down the door where Clara was hiding."

*"I didn't know they were going to shoot!"* he sobbed, the pathetic self-pity dripping from every word. *"They told me they just needed to secure her as leverage! Maya, please, you have to help me! They turned on me! The moment they hit the Georgetown penthouse, their handlers told me I was burned! They locked me in the service tunnels beneath the old Navy Yard! There’s an automated purge sequence running on this terminal!"*

"Why should I care if you die in a tunnel, Richard?"

*"Because I have the flight transponder key for the Volga-One!"* Richard screamed into the microphone.

The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.

Hicks looked up at me, his eyes wide.

*"They used my dummy LLC to purchase the satellite communication uplink for the Russian bird,"* Richard stammered, desperate to keep me on the line. *"The stealth aircraft uses an encrypted civilian ground relay to receive its landing clearances. Without my terminal's rolling crypto-token, that plane will never come below thirty thousand feet. It will dump fuel and slip back into international waters before you ever locate it! Clara will die, Maya! Clara will die, and it will be your fault for not saving me!"*

The narcissism of the man was breathtaking. Even on the verge of execution, he was still trying to make his daughter’s murder my failure.

"What do you want, Richard?" I asked, my voice deadly soft.

*"A clean extraction. A JSOC chopper to fly me to the Canadian border, five million in bearer bonds, and a full pardon signed by the Director of National Intelligence,"* Richard barked, trying desperately to sound like a man holding all the cards. *"I’m in Sub-Station 4 beneath the Navy Yard pumping facility. You come alone. You bring the flight clearance codes from your Pentagon badge. You save me... and I give you Clara's life."*

"I’m coming, Richard," I said, looking down at Clara’s sweat-soaked brow, her small chest laboring for every ragged breath. "Stay right where you are. Don't move an inch."

I cut the transmission.

"It’s an ambush, Colonel," Hicks said immediately. "The Navy Yard pumping station was decommissioned five years ago. It’s a subterranean maze of concrete culverts and industrial machinery. If he has an uplink terminal, he has an entire security detail waiting to put a bullet in your head the moment you walk through that door."

"I know," I replied, loading fresh magazines into my combat harness. I looked at Hicks, my eyes locked on his. "You stay here. Administer IV fluids and keep Clara’s core temperature down with the cryo-blankets. You have two hours and forty minutes."

"And if you don't come back with that token?" Hicks asked quietly.

I racked the slide of my sidearm, the sharp metallic snap echoing through the concrete room like a promise.

May you like

"Then I’ll tear down the sky with my bare hands."
