Chapter 38 - The Redacted Citadel

"T-Twelve... point... four gigahertz!" Richard sobbed, hyperventilating, snot and tears mixing with the rain on his face. "The key to the kill-switch... it’s inside the silver case! The code is 0-9-1-1-8-8! Don't shoot! Please, Maya, don't shoot! I’m begging you!"

I stepped on his wrist, pinning it to the concrete, and used my combat knife to shear the link of the handcuffs connecting the briefcase to his arm. I punched the six-digit code into the tumbler.

The heavy aluminum case popped open with a pneumatic hiss.

Inside sat a hardened military quantum drive, a pair of biometric scramblers, and an encrypted satellite tablet. But beside them lay a dossier bound in red leather, stamped with the highest level of national security classification: **[EYES ONLY — PRESIDENTIAL STRATEGIC ARCHIVE]**.

I flipped open the cover.

On the first page was an organizational chart detailing "Operation Matryoshka." At the very top wasn't a Russian general. It wasn't Henderson.

It was a photograph of the current Vice President of the United States—Arthur Sterling.

Beneath his face was a handwritten directive, signed in 2021:

*[Ensure Colonel Vance is contained within the domestic perimeter. If she initiates an independent audit of the Department of Defense budget, initiate extraction of the child asset and eliminate Vance under Protocol 14-B.]*

"He’s in Washington right now," Richard wheezed, his fingers clawing at the concrete, his face pale from blood loss. "He’s at the private residence in Georgetown... coordinating the exfiltration of the entire domestic network before your counter-cipher can reach NORAD. If you kill me, you’ll never stop him. He has an entire battalion of private military contractors securing the perimeter!"

"I don't need a battalion," I said quietly, looking down at the broken man who had lived in my house, eaten at my table, and terrorized my family for seven years.

"Maya... please," he whimpered, looking up into my eyes, searching for a trace of the quiet, patient wife who used to cook him dinner after twelve-hour shifts at the Pentagon. "Remember who you are. You’re Maya. You loved me once."

"Maya Vance was a quiet wife," I whispered, pulling back the hammer of the Sig Sauer. "Colonel Vance is an executioner."

I pulled the trigger.

The shot cracked through the night, and Richard’s body went limp against the wet pier.

I kicked his corpse into the freezing, oil-slicked waters of the Chesapeake Bay without looking back.

I grabbed the briefcase, climbed into the Ford F-250, and floored the accelerator back toward the shipping terminal.

It was 0315 hours. The Vice President was eighty miles away in Washington. And my daughter still had a spy device ticking inside her skull.
