Chapter 15 - The Redacted Manifest

The heavy blast of the breaching charge at Safehouse Charlie-4 tore the steel frame off its hinges with a blinding flash of orange fire and white smoke.

Lieutenant Ross fired a three-round burst through the smoke, catching the lead breacher in the chest plate. The mercenary stumbled backward, his ceramic armor stopping the slugs, before the second hostile stepped into the frame with a short-barreled shotgun.

*Boom.*

Ross took the blast to the shoulder, collapsing against the kitchen island with a groan of agony, his weapon sliding across the slick laminate floor toward Evelyn and Lily.

The lead mercenary stepped over Ross’s blood, lowering his rifle directly at Evelyn’s forehead. His eyes behind the ballistic goggles were empty, dead.

"Target confirmed," he muttered into his throat mic. "Mother and spawn secured. Terminating per protocol."

"Wait!" Evelyn screamed, throwing herself across Lily, shielding the child with every ounce of life left in her frail, trembling body. "Take me! Let her go! She’s just a baby!"

The mercenary’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Suddenly, the roof of the safehouse groaned under the catastrophic downforce of a twin-turbine engine. The windows shattered outward as a MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter hovered twenty feet above the lawn, its twin Miniguns spinning up with a terrifying, high-pitched electrical whine.

Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, the glass skylight above the living room exploded in a shower of reinforced shards.

Two federal counter-assault operators rappeled down on fast ropes, their assault rifles barking in semi-automatic unison. The lead mercenary was lifted off his feet by four heavy rounds to the upper torso, crashing through the dining table. The second breacher attempted to bring his shotgun to bear, but a sniper round from the hovering Black Hawk punched clean through the wall, ripping through his throat.

The room fell into stunned, ringing silence, punctuated only by the deafening rotor wash blowing papers and shattered glass across the floor.

An operator dropped to one knee beside Evelyn and Lily, securing the perimeter with one hand while pressing his comm with the other.

"Package secure," the operator shouted over the rotor noise. "Repeat: Colonel Vance’s family is safe. Targets neutralized."

Huddled on the floor, little Lily slowly peeked out from beneath her grandmother’s arm. She saw the American flag patch on the operator’s tactical shoulder, identical to the patch she had once seen secretly tucked inside her mother’s hidden footlocker.

"Mommy sent you," the little girl whispered, wiping away a bloody tear.

May you like

The operator gave her a single, firm nod. "Your mother runs the whole damn sky, kid. Nobody touches you."
