Chapter 11 - The Dead Drop at Pier 42

The adrenaline from General Marcus Sterling’s arrest had not even begun to recede before my tactical comm unit buzzed against my ribcage. The frequency was restricted—Level-1 Counter-Intelligence Task Force.

"Colonel Vance," Captain Miller’s voice crackled through the encrypted earpiece, tight and stripped of formality. "Sterling wasn’t working alone in the commercial sector. We just pulled a secondary relay signal from his personal terminal before the MPs wiped it. A ping was sent thirty seconds before his cuffs clicked. Destination: Baltimore Harbor, Berth 14."

I walked briskly down the polished granite corridor of the Pentagon, my dress uniform pristine, the silver eagles on my collar catching the overhead fluorescent glare. Staff officers, aides, and junior lieutenants snapped to attention as I passed, sensing the lethal gravity radiating from my stride. They had seen the MPs escort a three-star general away in irons ten minutes ago. Now, they saw me—the woman who had engineered his downfall without raising her voice above a commanding whisper.

"Deploy Team Bravo to secure the perimeter around Berth 14," I ordered into the mic, pressing the elevator button down to the subterranean motor pool. "Do not engage. Do not trip local port authority alarms. If this is the logistics pipeline Sterling warned me about, they will have scuttle protocols in place."

"Understood, ma'am. And... what about your family?"

A knot tightened in my chest, but my face remained carved from ice. "My mother and daughter are under Tier-1 protective custody at Fort Meade. Lieutenant Ross is running twenty-four-hour overwatch. If a fly buzzes near my daughter’s window without authorization, I expect it grounded."

"Copy that, Colonel. Your vehicle is waiting at Sub-Level 3."

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the humming beehive of the Department of Defense. In the reflective stainless-steel panel, I caught my own reflection. Dark circles haunted the skin beneath my eyes, the bitter souvenir of sleepless nights pretending to be a browbeaten, submissive housewife while my useless husband, Richard, sneered at me across our kitchen table.

Richard had thought I was weak. He had thought my long absences were spent doing clerical admin work for meager pay. He had dared to raise his hand against our daughter, Lily, leaving purple bruises on her delicate skin, while denying my ailing mother her heart medication to pocket the allowance I sent home. He had gloated, calling himself the king of our modest home while secretly laundering Sterling’s dirty defense-contract payoffs through shell LLCs.

He was currently sitting in a cold, concrete cell at a classified holding facility in northern Virginia, awaiting charges of domestic treason, extortion, and human asset tampering. He thought his world had ended.

He didn't know his nightmare was only entering phase two.

The elevator chimed, opening to the subterranean bay. An unmarked matte-black armored Suburban idle-purred beneath halogen floodlights. Sergeant First Class Tyler, my senior tactical driver, slammed the passenger door open.

"Colonel," Tyler greeted, his eyes sharp behind ballistic sunglasses. "Where to?"

"Baltimore," I said, sliding into the front seat and snapping my harness into place. "Pier 42. Berth 14. We have forty-two minutes before Sterling’s handlers realize their general isn’t answering his phone."

The engine roared, tires gripping the concrete as we shot up the ramp and into the blinding midday light of the capital.
