Chapter 28 - The Digital Execution

Behind Clara, the monitors began a furious, automated broadcast that was not confined to Rosewood Manor.
Lines of code flashed with devastating efficiency:
*BROADCAST NODE: ASSOCIATED PRESS.*
*BROADCAST NODE: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.*
*BROADCAST NODE: INTERPOL CENTRAL REPOSITORY.*
*BROADCAST NODE: NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE.*
"What is that?" I asked, watching millions of documents unspool across the screens in real time.
"Arthur’s ultimate dead-man switch," Clara said, stepping closer to the broadcast console. "Nine years ago, Julian gathered every piece of proof: the wire transfers to hostile intelligence assets, the offshore contracts signed by Marcus, the forged autopsy reports that Helen paid off to declare me legally dead, and the complete paper trail of Vanessa’s shell company that facilitated it all."
On the live news feed appearing in the corner of the screen, a major financial news network interrupted its prime-time broadcast.
A breathless anchor appeared on screen: *"Breaking news out of Wall Street. In what appears to be an unprecedented, coordinated leak, thousands of classified internal files from Sterling Global Defense have been made public across all federal databases. Trading on Sterling Global has been halted immediately as the Department of Justice issues emergency arrest warrants for CEO Marcus Sterling and Founder Helen Sterling..."*
Through the monitor looking up into the foyer, we saw Marcus Sterling freeze. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket. The screen was flashing with hundreds of notifications, missed calls from high-ranking defense officials, and alerts showing his net worth plunging toward zero within seconds.
"No... no, no, no!" Marcus screamed, hurling his phone against the wall, shattering it into pieces. He turned toward his mother, his face twisted in madness. "Mother! The Swiss accounts! The offshore holding companies in the Caymans! They’re being drained!"
Helen Sterling didn't move. She stood as rigid as a statue, watching the security camera that connected her to our bunker.
*"You planned this from the very beginning,"* Helen said through the speaker, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. *"Even when you were rotting in that cell in Cranston... you knew Arthur would find the child."*
"Arthur didn't find the child, Helen," Clara said, her voice resonant with absolute authority. "The child found Arthur. Lily knew what Vanessa was doing to her. Lily remembered the lullaby I used to sing to her when she was a baby. She spent three years memorizing every ledger, every passkey Vanessa left open on her laptop."
I looked down at Lily. The little girl who had appeared so fragile at the wedding, who had been treated like a pawn in high-society games, looked back at me with eyes that possessed the brilliant, terrifying intellect of both Julian and Clara combined.
"Vanessa thought I was playing with dolls," Lily said into the microphone, her voice echoing into the foyer above. "I was reading her bank statements."
Upstairs, Vanessa let out a blood-curdling scream. She scrambled toward the camera, her face streaked with tears and mascara, looking directly into the lens.
"Eleanor! Clara! Please!" Vanessa begged, her voice scraping against the microphone. "I'm your sister! I made a mistake! Marcus forced me! He threatened to kill me if I didn't take the child! You can't leave me in here with them! They’re going to kill me!"

Marcus Sterling turned toward Vanessa, his eyes wild and bloodshot, drawing a heavy semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.
