Chapter 27 - The Cage Beneath the Sea

Before Clara or I could stop her, Lily reached into the pocket of her small denim overalls.
She didn't pull out a flash drive. She pulled out the silver-and-amethyst hair clip that Vanessa had forced her to wear down the aisle at the wedding—the very clip that Vanessa had claimed was a family heirloom worth tens of thousands of dollars.
With a sharp, practiced snap, Lily twisted the base of the hair clip. The amethyst stone popped off, revealing an ultra-dense, micro-optical connector.
"Uncle Arthur gave me this on the morning of the wedding," Lily said, her tone utterly calm despite the tremors shaking the concrete floor beneath our feet. "He told me: *'If your aunt Vanessa ever tries to take you to the safehouse, put this into the red port under the desk.'*"
Clara stared at the tiny device, her jaw slung open in realization. "Arthur didn't give Julian’s master key to me... he gave it to Lily."
Lily walked purposefully toward the central pedestal. Beneath the main keyboard was an unlisted, circular input socket glowing with a faint crimson ring. Without hesitation, she inserted the hair clip.
The entire subterranean hangar plunged into absolute darkness for two terrifying seconds.
Then, a low, tectonic hum began to vibrate through the bedrock.
The emergency lights didn't flicker back on in red; they ignited in a blinding, clinical blue. Across the three-story wall of monitors, the chaotic streams of data suddenly coalesced into a single, terrifying program interface:
*PROJECT CHIMERA: PROTOCOL OMEGA ACTIVATED.*
*FACILITY LOCKDOWN INITIATED.*
*SEISMIC CHARGES DETECTED... OVERRIDING EXTERNAL DETONATORS.*
Above our heads, through the audio feeds, we heard the sudden, confused shouting of Marcus’s mercenaries.
*"Boss! The charges won't fire! The digital triggers are cycling backward!"*
*"What do you mean they won't fire? Use the manual line!"* Marcus roared.
*"The manual line is dead! The whole house... the electronics are locking up! The security blast doors are dropping throughout the estate!"*
On the monitors, we watched in real-time as heavy, two-inch-thick steel storm shutters slammed shut across every window, every door, and every exit of Rosewood Manor above. The opulent mansion had instantly transformed into a hermetically sealed, impenetrable steel trap.
"What did you do, Lily?" I whispered, awestruck.
"I locked them in with us," Lily replied quietly, looking up at the ceiling. "Uncle Julian said the monsters shouldn't be allowed to leave."
The intercom terminal on the central console chimed, and Helen Sterling’s face appeared on the primary high-definition display.
The matriarch’s composed facade was finally cracking. Her pale, aristocratic skin was flushed with rage; her silver-tipped cane was clenched in white-knuckled fury. Beside her, Marcus was feverishly pounding his fist against a sealed titanium elevator gate, while Vanessa wept hysterically on the marble floor, her expensive emerald suit covered in dust and debris.
*"Clara!"* Helen hissed through the monitor, her eyes scanning the hidden lens in our bunker. *"You think you can bury me in my own son's house? Deactivate this sequence instantly, or I swear to God, I will have every asset associated with you wiped from the earth!"*
Clara stepped in front of the camera, a cold, merciless smile touching her lips for the first time in nine years.
May you like
"You don't have any assets left, Helen," Clara said.
