Chapter 15 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The air vanished from my lungs. The ground beneath my feet seemed to dissolve into an infinite, terrifying abyss.
*Julian Sterling’s biological heir.*
My mind spun in wild, sickening circles, frantically trying to piece together the shattered puzzle of my past. Nine years ago, my pregnancy had been labeled a medical miracle by the fertility specialists in Boston. My then-fiancé, a young architect named David, had vanished in a mysterious drowning accident off Cape Cod just weeks after I conceived. Vanessa had stepped in, introducing me to Marcus Vance, who claimed to be David’s distant cousin, offering legal support and managing our family’s estates.
It was all a lie. A calculated, multi-decade conspiracy.
David hadn't drowned by accident. And Marcus wasn't a family friend.
"Mom?" Lily's voice trembled, pulling me out of the paralyzing fog. "What does it mean? Who is Julian Sterling?"
"He's... he's no one you ever have to worry about, baby," I lied, my voice cracking as I frantically stuffed the black folders and the steel cryo-container into my backpack. "We have to get back to Graham. Now."
Before we could take two steps toward the trapdoor, the heavy timber doors of the carriage house were blown inward with a deafening crash.
Splinters of wood and glass rained across the stone floor. Three men dressed in black tactical gear burst into the room, their assault rifles raised, the green lasers of their sights painting the dust-filled air.
"Freeze! Don't move!" a harsh voice barked.
I immediately threw myself over Lily, shielding her small body with my own against the cold floor, bracing for the impact of bullets.
"Secure the package!" one of the men shouted through a radio. "We have the child. Target Eleanor is neutralized."
Footsteps crunched heavily on the broken glass. A pair of polished leather boots stopped inches from my face.
"Get up, Eleanor," a calm, chillingly familiar voice commanded.
I lifted my head, my teeth gritted in sheer hatred. Standing above me wasn't a mercenary. It was Marcus Vance.
He was supposed to be in a medium-security federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, serving an eleven-year sentence for wire fraud, extortion, and corporate sabotage.
Yet here he stood, wearing an expensive camel-hair trench coat, his smug, handsome face sporting a fresh scar across his left eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with sadistic triumph.
"Marcus," I hissed, tightening my grip on Lily, who was trembling violently beneath me. "How are you out? Graham filed federal hold orders on your bail!"
"Graham is a county-level cockroach playing in a league of kings," Marcus laughed, crouching down to my eye level. He reached out to touch Lily's hair, but I violently snapped my head forward, biting down on his gloved knuckles.
"Bitch!" Marcus snarled, pulling his hand back and backhanding me across the cheek. The force of the blow threw me sideways, my vision exploding into brilliant flashes of white and red.
"Mom!" Lily screamed, clawing at Marcus's coat. "Don't touch her! Don't touch my mom!"
One of the tactical operatives grabbed Lily by her coat collar, hoisting her off the ground as she kicked and screamed with wild ferocity.
"Easy with the merchandise, you idiot!" Marcus snapped at the guard, rising to his feet and straightening his tie. "Julian Sterling doesn't want a single scratch on his granddaughter's skin. If she bruises, your family pays for it in blood."
"You won't get away with this, Marcus," I gasped, wiping blood from the corner of my split lip, struggling to push myself up from the stone floor. "Graham knows. The federal authorities will hunt you down like the dog you are."
"Graham is currently handcuffed to his own radiator in the main house, Eleanor," Marcus said with a cold, mocking grin. "The Providence state police just arrested him for attempted murder of a court officer. Victoria set him up beautifully. By tomorrow morning, Rosewood will be demolished, Lily will be on a private jet to Zurich, and you... well, Eleanor, you’ll be buried in the family cemetery next to your dear old dad."
May you like
Marcus signaled the guards. "Take the child to the helicopter at the cliff pad. Put Eleanor in the trunk of the town car. We’re going to have a very private family reunion."
