Chapter 16 - The Reckoning at Blackwood Cliffs

Consciousness returned in jagged, brutal waves.

The smell of sea salt and jet fuel was overwhelming. My wrists were bound tightly behind my back with heavy-duty zip ties, biting into my skin until my hands were completely numb.

I was tossed onto the wet grass of Blackwood Cliffs—the desolate, windswept headland that bordered the southernmost tip of our estate, towering a hundred feet above the raging, foaming Atlantic surf.

A twin-engine Eurocopter sat idling on the grass, its massive rotor blades spinning with a deafening, rhythmic thrum that whipped the cold sea spray across my face.

Standing near the edge of the cliff was Julian Sterling. In the flesh.

He looked even more terrifying than he had on the encrypted video. Up close, his eyes were like chips of antique glass—pale, merciless, and completely devoid of human empathy. Standing beside him was Victoria Vance, holding Lily by the shoulder.

Lily wasn't screaming anymore. She was watching Julian with a look of pure, concentrated venom that mirrored my father's fiercest moments.

"Let her go, Julian!" I screamed, struggling against the two guards who held me pinned to the muddy turf. "She's an eight-year-old child! Whatever Arthur did to you, take it out on me!"

Julian Sterling turned slowly, his long wool coat billowing in the rotor wash. He took a single, elegant step toward me, looking down as if examining an insect on the sole of his shoe.

"Arthur didn't take money from me, Eleanor," Julian spoke, his voice cutting clearly through the roar of the helicopter engines. "Arthur *stole* my son. Thirty years ago, Arthur discovered that I was building a syndicate that would control the political infrastructure of New England. He panicked. He staged David's disappearance, created a fake identity for him, and hid him right under my nose. And then, David met you."

Julian walked over to Lily, gently placing his hand on her head. Lily violently jerked away, spitting at his polished shoes.

Julian didn't flinch. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his lips.

"Remarkable," Julian whispered. "She has the Sterling fire. When David refused to return to the family, Marcus took care of him. But David's seed was already planted inside you, Eleanor. Arthur tried to hide her with trusts, with dummy corporations, with that pathetic flash drive your sister was too stupid to understand."

Julian turned back to me, his smile vanishing into a mask of pure ice.

"Arthur thought he won when he sent Vanessa to prison. But all he did was clear the board for me. Marcus, throw Eleanor over the cliff. Let the tide clean up the family mess once and for all."

Marcus stepped forward, pulling a combat knife from his tactical vest, his face twisted with sadistic pleasure. "With pleasure, Mr. Sterling."

Marcus grabbed me by the collar of my sweater, dragging my bound body toward the sheer edge of the hundred-foot precipice where the black waves crashed against the jagged rocks below.

"Any last words for your daughter, Eleanor?" Marcus whispered into my ear, pressing the cold steel of the blade against my neck.

"Just one," I choked out, locking eyes with Lily.

"Lily! The clover!" I screamed with every ounce of air left in my lungs. "THE CLOVER!"
