Chapter 23 - The Siege of Rosewood

The blast wave threw me violently against the Persian rug. The bitter stench of C4 explosive flooded the library, instantly choking my throat.

"Down!" Clara roared.

She lunged through the air, shielding Lily with her own body as a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the ancient mahogany shelves. Leather-bound first editions were shredded into thousands of fluttering paper confetti. Antique vases shattered into dust.

Through the smoke, four heavily armored operatives in matte-black combat gear and night-vision goggles moved into the breach, their rifle-mounted laser sights slicing through the haze like neon surgical needles.

"Target acquired: Female adult, priority capture child," a mechanized voice barked through a comms unit.

I scrambled backward on my hands and knees, my ears ringing with an agonizing whine. Lily didn't scream. She didn't cry. The eight-year-old child lay flat beneath Clara, her eyes eerily calm, clutching her rabbit as if she had rehearsed this nightmare a thousand times.

Clara rolled behind an overturned marble pedestal. In two blindingly fast movements, she raised her suppressed pistol. *Phut. Phut.*

Two subsonic rounds struck the lead operative directly through the unarmored seam beneath his tactical helmet. The man collapsed like a cut puppet, his rifle clattering across the hardwood floor.

"Eleanor! Vault door! Open it!" Clara shouted, returning fire in rhythmic, calculated double-taps to suppress the advancing squad.

I clawed my way toward the fireplace. The steel door inside the hearth was cold, its biometric interface glowing with a menacing amber prompt: *ENTER MASTER CYPHER OR BLOOD MATCH.*

"I don't know the code!" I screamed over the deafening cacophony of shattering masonry and ricocheting bullets.

"Lily knows it!" Clara fired her last round, dropped the empty magazine, and slammed another home in a single fluid flick of her wrist. "Lily, tell Aunt El the numbers!"

Lily lifted her head from the floor. Her voice, cutting through the gunfire, was terrifyingly clear and devoid of panic: "Three-one-four, alpha, seven-nine, omega. Mommy's birthday. Rosewood's fall."

I jammed the sequence into the numeric pad. The interface flashed green: *CREDENTIAL CONFIRMED. WELCOME, CLARA STERLING.*

The heavy steel door unsealed with a hydraulic hiss, swinging open to reveal a descending spiral staircase illuminated by low-voltage floor strips.

"Go! Go!" Clara shoved Lily into my arms.

As I dragged Lily through the threshold, a stray rifle round tore through Clara’s left shoulder. She gasped, stumbling forward into the vault. Blood, crimson and slick, sprayed across the steel threshold.

I grabbed Clara’s tactical harness and hauled her inside with all the adrenaline-fueled strength in my body, slamming the mechanical locking lever down just as a barrage of high-caliber rounds slammed against the outer steel plate, leaving massive, dented impressions.

The heavy thud of boots stopped on the other side of the reinforced barrier.

Then, through the exterior intercom speaker mounted beside the vault door, a chillingly familiar voice filtered into the bunker, accompanied by the slow, mocking applause of leather-gloved hands.

"Very impressive, Clara," Marcus Sterling’s velvety, sociopathic voice purred through the speaker. "Nine years in a subterranean cell, and you still shoot straight. But you’re trapped in a tomb, ladies. And guess who just signed the warrant for Rosewood’s total demolition?"

Beside me, Clara spat blood onto the concrete floor and whispered, "Vanessa."
