Chapter 26 - The Unholy Alliance

"They brought seismic drilling charges," Clara cursed, lunging toward the central terminal. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with astonishing velocity, bringing up the subterranean blueprints. "They aren't trying to breach the blast door. They’re collapsing the cliff face! If they drop three hundred tons of granite on this cave, the servers will be crushed, and we drown in the Atlantic tide!"

"Can we stop the detonation from here?" I yelled over the increasing shudder of the rock walls.

"Not from this console," Clara breathed, her amber eyes scanning lines of incoming system alerts. "The detonation sequence is controlled by a local detonator. Marcus has to be on the grounds to trigger it. But look at this."

She slammed her fist onto an enter key, maximizing a live drone feed onto the central holographic display.

The feed showed the front gates of Rosewood. A convoy of three black armored suburbans had just breached the perimeter, smashing through Arthur’s wrought-iron gates. But they weren't Marcus’s men.

From the lead vehicle stepped four individuals wearing federal tactical windbreakers labeled *DOJ SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS*.

And leading them was a woman whose face made my blood run instantly cold.

Helen Sterling. Marcus and Julian’s mother—the reclusive, ruthless matriarch who had vanished from high society five years ago, rumored to be in hospice care in Switzerland.

She didn't look like an invalid. Dressed in a tailored black wool coat, leaning lightly on a silver-tipped cane, she moved with the predatory grace of a queen visiting a conquered province.

"Mother is here," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and disgust.

"Helen?" I stammered. "I thought Arthur said she was incapacitated!"

"Helen is the one who founded Sterling Global, Eleanor!" Clara revealed, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she bypassed firewall after firewall. "Marcus is an arrogant thug with expensive suits, but Helen is the architect. She pitted Julian and Marcus against each other from the day they were born. When Julian refused to turn the company’s tech into illegal weapons, Helen approved Marcus’s hit on his own brother!"

Through the security audio feed, Helen’s voice resonated through the manor’s ruined foyer above:

*"Marcus, you incompetent fool,"* the matriarch’s icy voice rang out, carrying through the estate’s intercom relay. *"You turned a simple extraction into a public massacre. The Federal Bureau is ten minutes behind me. Where is the child?"*

Vanessa’s voice piped up, nervous and sycophantic: *"Mother Helen! We have them cornered in the subterranean sub-vault. Marcus has set the seismic charges. As soon as the vault is breached—"*

*CRACK.*

A loud, wet slap echoed through the audio feed, followed by Vanessa’s sharp shriek of pain.

*"Silence, you pathetic little social climber,"* Helen snapped with lethal disgust. *"You thought you were marrying into this family? You were a delivery girl, Vanessa. You were paid to raise Julian’s seed until it was ripe for harvest. Now, Marcus, bring the manual override key. We go down there together."*

Clara looked at me, her face pale, the bandage on her shoulder now soaked through with fresh, dark blood.

"There’s only one way out of this, El," Clara said quietly, pulling a heavy tactical shotgun from an emergency rack beside the terminal. "The sea cave has an emergency drainage tunnel that empties onto the private beach below the cliffs. You take Lily and the backup drive. I’ll stay here and rig the main terminal to overload the power grid. When they blow the floor, I’ll blow them to hell."

"No!" Lily’s small voice pierced the roar of the rumbling earth.

She walked up to Clara, her small hands firmly grasping the barrel of the shotgun, pushing it down.

"Lily, baby, listen to Mommy—" Clara began.

"You don't have to die, Mommy," Lily said, her eyes flashing with an intelligence far beyond her eight years. "Uncle Julian didn't build a bomb. He built a cage."
