Chapter 3 - Poison in the Garden

The manager tapped the glass screen with a trembling finger, rewinding the timestamp by precisely seven minutes.
The footage was captured in crystal-clear, high-definition 4K resolution, capturing every leaf and shadow in vivid detail.
Daniel leaned over the screen, his breath hitching in his throat as the video began to play.
The footage showed Emily walking toward the resort’s towel cabana fifty yards away, completely oblivious to what was happening behind her.
Sophie had been kneeling peacefully by the edge of the shallow decorative pond, tossing small blossoms into the water.
Patricia appeared from the shaded pathway, her expensive cream silk trousers rustling as she approached the child from behind.
There was no warmth in her approach, no playful grandmotherly demeanor whatsoever.
Her face on the screen was twisted into a bitter, venomous sneer.
On the screen, Patricia grabbed the five-year-old by her thin ankles without warning.
Sophie had kicked frantically, her little hands desperately clawing at the stone border to find purchase.
Patricia had hoisted the child entirely upside down, swinging her outward like a bag of unwanted refuse.
Then, with calculated, cold-blooded precision, Patricia opened her hands.
Sophie crashed face-first into the murky water, disappearing entirely beneath the surface for two agonizing seconds.
Patricia had stood there on the bank, crossing her arms over her chest, watching the child struggle without moving a muscle.
The video clearly showed Emily sprinting across the lawn, throwing her phone aside, and diving into the pond without a second thought.
Emily had dragged Sophie out, gasping and choking on stagnant water, cradling the weeping child against her heart.
And then Daniel appeared on the screen, running at full speed down the gravel path.
The video captured Patricia turning instantly toward Daniel, throwing her hands in the air, and dramatically screaming her false accusation.
Finally, the footage showed Daniel skidding to a halt, raising his right hand, and striking Emily with sickening violence.
The crisp audio from the camera’s directional microphone captured the sickening smack of skin against skin with horrifying clarity.
Daniel felt all the oxygen leave his lungs as if he had been struck by a speeding freight train.
The manager quietly stepped back, looking down at the grass in embarrassed silence.
The nearby security guards stared at Patricia with unfiltered disgust and shock.
Daniel slowly turned his head to face his mother, his eyes completely bloodshot and dilated with unbridled rage.
Patricia was clutching her designer handbag against her stomach like a shield, trembling violently.
"Daniel, you have to understand the context..." Patricia whimpered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. "The little brat was being disrespectful to me! She spoke back to me!"
"She is five years old," Daniel whispered, his voice dangerously low, practically vibrating with fury.
"She has Emily's blood in her! She has that low-class, disgusting attitude!" Patricia shrieked, losing her composure entirely.
"You dropped my daughter upside down into a pond!" Daniel roared, his voice booming across the resort courtyard like thunder.
Several hotel guests gasped in horror, stepping back from the older woman as if she carried a lethal contagion.
"I was teaching her a lesson!" Patricia screamed back, completely unhinged now that her mask had been shattered. "You let that waitress marry you, and she turned your daughter into a spoiled, disobedient peasant!"
"Get away from us," Daniel said, his fists shaking so violently he had to press them against his thighs.
"Daniel, I am your mother!" Patricia cried out, tears of genuine panic finally spilling down her powdered cheeks. "You cannot talk to me like this! I built your life! I gave you everything!"
"You almost drowned my child," Daniel said, every syllable dropping like a heavy iron weight.
He turned toward the resort manager without taking his eyes off Patricia.
"Call the police," Daniel ordered coldly.
Patricia’s eyes bulged in pure disbelief, her aristocratic arrogance suddenly shattering into absolute terror.
"Daniel! What are you doing?! You cannot call the police on your own mother!"
"Watch me," Daniel replied, his voice dead and devoid of any familial warmth.
"Call them right now," Daniel repeated to the manager, "and tell them to bring handcuffs for attempted murder and child abuse."
The manager nodded briskly and immediately pulled out his personal phone to dial 911.
Patricia stepped backward, stumbling over the stone curb, her designer purse falling open and spilling cosmetics onto the dirt.
She looked at Emily, hoping to find some shred of maternal mercy or female solidarity, but Emily didn't even acknowledge her existence.
Emily remained entirely focused on Sophie, whispering gentle reassurances into the little girl's wet hair.
"Mommy's here, baby," Emily whispered softly, kissing Sophie's damp forehead. "You're safe now. Mommy has you."
Daniel slowly sank down to his knees in the grass before his wife, his entire frame shaking with unbearable guilt.
The full weight of what he had done slammed into his soul with catastrophic, crushing force.
He had hit the woman who had spent six years enduring his mother’s snide remarks and cruel snubs without complaint.
He had struck the woman who had just braved the pond to save their daughter's life from his own monstrous mother.
"Emily..." Daniel choked out, tears finally streaming down his rugged, pale face. "Emily, oh God, what have I done?"
He reached out to touch the hem of her wet dress, desperate for any sign of forgiveness or connection.
Emily pulled her dress away from his trembling fingers as if his touch were scorching hot iron.

She looked him straight in the eyes, her gaze colder than the winter ice, devoid of love, pity, or warmth.
"Do not ever look at me again," Emily whispered.
