Chapter 18 - The Matriarch's Ultimatum

The orange glow of the burning house cast monstrous, dancing shadows across Evelyn's hollowed face.

Smoke curled into the night sky behind Emily and Daniel, framing the showdown in fire and brimstone.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of Emily and Sophie, his broad shoulders shielding them completely from the barrel of the gun.

"Step away from them, Mother," Daniel said, his voice deadly level despite the shaking in his knees.

"Move aside, Daniel," Evelyn commanded, her finger tightening against the trigger.

"You have ruined everything your father and I built. You handed our bloodline to the government on a silver platter."

"You ruined it yourself when you tried to drown our child!" Emily shouted from behind Daniel's shoulder.

Sophie was sobbing uncontrollably, trembling against Emily's chest, her tiny fingers digging into the fabric of her coat.

"She is not *your* child!" Evelyn shrieked, her aristocratic facade entirely shattered into raw psychosis.

"She carries Vance blood! She was meant to ensure our legacy, not be raised by a lower-class secretary who dared to marry above her station!"

"I loved you, Mother," Daniel said, his voice breaking with genuine, devastating sorrow.

"Even when I knew you were cruel. Even when I knew you despised Emily. I still loved you because you were my mother."

Evelyn’s eyes flickered with a brief spark of human emotion, but it was swallowed instantly by icy contempt.

"Love is a disease of the weak, Daniel. Your father had it, and look what happened to him."

"You admitted it," Daniel whispered, tears streaming through the soot on his cheeks. "You murdered him."

"He was going to leave our wealth to a charity foundation!" Evelyn yelled, the gun trembling in her hand.

"He was going to let our name die! I did what had to be done! And I will do it again tonight!"

"You'll have to shoot me first," Daniel declared, taking a slow step forward into the open clearing.

"Don't test me, Daniel!" Evelyn warned, raising the gun directly at his forehead.

"Do it," Daniel said softly, stepping closer until the barrel was less than three feet from his eyes.

"Shoot the only child you ever had. Let the world see what kind of monster Evelyn Vance truly is."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. "Daniel, no!"

"Stay back, Emily," Daniel commanded without looking away from his mother's crazed eyes.

"All my life, I let you control me, Mother. I let you dictate who I was, how I lived, and how I treated the woman I loved."

Daniel took another step, the cold steel barrel now pressing directly against the center of his forehead.

"I let you poison my soul until I raised my hand against my own wife," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with years of suppressed shame.

"I gave you everything. But you will not have my daughter."

Evelyn stared at him, her knuckles white around the grip, her chest heaving beneath the hospital coat.

"You think you’re a hero now?" Evelyn sneered, though her finger trembled slightly against the trigger.

"You are nothing without me, Daniel. You have no money. No home. No family left."

"I have my soul," Daniel said simply. "Pull the trigger, Mother. End it."

May you like

Evelyn’s jaw clenched with murderous venom.

"With pleasure," she whispered, her finger beginning to squeeze the heavy trigger back.
