Chapter 2 - The Eye in the Willow

The camera was a discreet, weatherproof dome tucked neatly beneath the sprawling willow branches.

Its tiny red indicator light blinked rhythmically, a silent witness to every second of the horror that had just unfolded.

Daniel stared at the lens, his heart dropping into the pit of his stomach like a lead weight.

The resort had spared no expense on guest surveillance and property safety.

Patricia noticed the direction of Daniel’s frozen gaze and tracked his eyes up into the foliage.

When she saw the black glass sphere, a sharp gasp caught in her throat.

Her aristocratic posture crumbled instantly, her shoulders hitching up toward her ears.

"Daniel, we need to take Sophie inside right now," Patricia stammered, stepping toward him with open arms. "She is going to catch pneumonia out here in the draft."

"Stay right where you are," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register Emily had never heard before.

It was not the tone of a protective son or a confused husband.

It was the hollow, dangerous sound of a man staring into the ruins of his own judgment.

He turned slowly to look down at Emily, who remained seated on the wet grass with Sophie clutched to her chest.

The red welt on Emily’s cheek had darkened into a deep, sickening purple.

She did not look at him with hatred; she looked at him with complete, agonizing emptiness.

That vacant look hurt Daniel far more than any scream or violent retaliation ever could.

"Emily..." Daniel whispered, taking an instinctive step forward, his hands reaching out toward her.

"Do not touch me," Emily said clearly, pulling Sophie closer to her heart.

Her voice didn't waver, even though her entire body shook from the chill of the water and the sheer adrenaline.

"Daniel, listen to your mother!" Patricia demanded, regaining a shred of her venomous arrogance. "Are you really going to believe a hysterical toddler over your own mother who raised you?"

"Shut up," Daniel growled, not even turning his head toward her.

Patricia gasped loudly, pressing a hand against her chest as if she had been physically struck.

"How dare you speak to me like that!" she exclaimed, looking around for support from the whispering onlookers.

Several hotel guests had gathered along the perimeter of the stone courtyard, murmuring among themselves and recording the confrontation on their phones.

Two resort security guards in navy blazers were already jogging down the gravel path toward them.

"Excuse me, sir, ma'am, is there an emergency?" the older security guard asked, eyeing Emily’s soaked clothing and bruised cheek.

Daniel immediately stepped in front of the guard, flashing his executive identification card from his wallet.

"My name is Daniel Vance," he said, his voice tight and shaking with barely suppressed fury. "I am staying in Villa Four."

The guard recognized the name immediately; the Vance family was one of the resort's high-tier corporate benefactors.

"Mr. Vance, what happened here?" the guard asked, glancing warily at Emily on the ground.

"I need your manager, and I need the security feed for that camera right there," Daniel ordered, pointing up at the willow tree.

"Daniel, no! This is a private family matter!" Patricia cried out, lunging forward to grab her son's arm.

Daniel violently ripped his arm away from his mother's grasp, causing her to lose her balance on her low designer heels.

"Do not touch me either, Mother," Daniel snarled, his eyes dark with a terrifying intensity.

Patricia recoiled, staring at him as though he had transformed into a stranger before her eyes.

"Sir, we can access the feeds inside the security hub immediately," the second guard offered, pulling a radio from his tactical belt.

"Bring the tablet out here," Daniel commanded, refusing to leave the spot where his wife sat bleeding on the lawn.

"Bring it here right now, or I swear to God I will buy this entire resort just to fire everyone who hesitates."

The authority in Daniel's voice was absolute, born of years commanding boardroom battles and managing multi-million-dollar investments.

The guard nodded rapidly, speaking urgent codes into his shoulder microphone as he hurried toward the main clubhouse.

Daniel turned back to Emily, slowly dropping to his knees on the damp grass beside her.

He tried to meet her eyes, but Emily deliberately turned her face away, focusing entirely on drying Sophie's shivering arms with her cardigan.

"Emily, please let me take her while we wait," Daniel begged softly, his voice cracking with immense regret.

"You lost the right to hold her the moment your hand hit my face," Emily whispered, never once looking at him.

Her words were quiet, but they tore through Daniel’s chest like shrapnel.

Behind them, Patricia paced anxiously on the stone path, her manicured fingers twisting her diamond rings until her knuckles turned red.

Her mind raced through dozens of excuses, fabrications, and medical conditions she could invent on the spot.

She could claim she slipped; she could claim Sophie tripped over her dress; she could claim it was a terrible accident.

Yet she knew deep down that none of those lies would explain holding a child upside down by her ankles.

Minutes felt like agonizing hours under the harsh afternoon sun as the resort garden remained frozen in tension.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the flagstones as the resort manager arrived, carrying a sleek black rugged tablet.

"Mr. Vance, I have the live playback queued up from camera seven," the manager said nervously, glancing at the gathering crowd.

Daniel stood up, his jaw set so tightly the muscles in his cheeks twitched.

"Show me," Daniel commanded, stepping forward.

Patricia lunged between Daniel and the manager, her eyes wide with frantic, unhinged desperation.

"Daniel, stop this madness right now! You are humiliating our entire family in front of common strangers!"

May you like

Daniel didn't flinch; he simply looked at the security manager and nodded.

"Play the tape."
