Chapter 25 - The Confession of Dr. Sterling

They killed the headlights fifty yards before the gate and rolled silently onto the overgrown gravel driveway.

The sanatorium stood four stories tall, its gothic stone spires cutting into the lightning-streaked clouds.

Weeds choked the marble stairs, and black water dripped from the stone gargoyles overhead.

Liam signaled for silence, raising his weapon as they approached the front entrance.

The heavy oak doors were unlocked, swinging inward with an agonizing groan that echoed through the vast rotunda.

Inside, the air smelled of mold, dried blood, and industrial antiseptic.

"Footprints in the dust," Emily whispered, pointing her flashlight beam at the marble floor.

Two sets of heavy boot prints led directly toward the eastern wing, accompanied by the small dragging marks of a child's shoe.

"Sophie," Daniel breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Suddenly, a weak cough echoed from an open doorway beneath the grand staircase.

Liam raised his weapon, stepping cautiously into the dimly lit room with Emily and Daniel right behind him.

An elderly man in a tattered white doctor's coat sat tied to a wooden wheelchair in the center of the room.

His face was badly bruised, his breathing shallow and rattling inside his chest.

"Dr. Sterling?" Daniel said, recognizing the name signed at the bottom of his birth certificate.

The old doctor raised his bloodshot eyes, blinking against the flashlight beam.

"Daniel...?" the old man gasped, coughing up phlegm. "God in heaven... you look just like her."

"Where is my daughter, Sterling?" Daniel demanded, kneeling before the old physician. "Where is Evelyn?"

"She went down... down to the sub-level tanks," Dr. Sterling whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "She brought the little girl."

"Why did you help her twenty-eight years ago?" Emily asked, her pistol held steady at her side. "Why did you steal Daniel from Victoria?"

"Evelyn paid me... and she threatened to bury my family alive," Sterling wept, tears carving lines through the dried grime on his cheeks. "Victoria discovered Evelyn was embezzling millions from the Vance trust."

"When Victoria threatened to expose her, Evelyn had her declared insane," Sterling continued, shivering uncontrollably. "And then Victoria gave birth."

"Evelyn couldn't have children," Daniel whispered, the dark puzzle finally snapping into place.

"She wanted the fortune, Daniel," Sterling wept. "She needed a male heir to control the board."

"So she stole you from Victoria's breast minutes after you were born, and told your father Victoria died during labor."

"Is Victoria still alive?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with desperate hope.

Dr. Sterling looked directly into Daniel's eyes with profound sorrow.

"She has been kept in the deep tanks below this floor for twenty-eight years, Daniel," the doctor whispered.

"And Evelyn came back tonight to drown them both together."
