Chapter 13 - The Intruder at the Threshold

Emily stopped breathing.
The chime was unmistakable—it was the secondary four-digit emergency code known only to two people in the world.
Herself and Daniel.
"Daniel," Emily whispered, her voice dropping into a razor-thin hiss. "Who has our emergency keypad code?"
Silence answered her from the phone for two agonizing seconds.
"Nobody," Daniel whispered back, pure terror bleeding through his tone. "Only you and I know it."
"Someone just punched it in," Emily said, her finger hovering over the screen to dial 911. "Someone is opening my back door right now."
"I’m three minutes away! Emily, don't move!" Daniel shouted over the line.
The heavy sound of footsteps echoed through the quiet house, crunching on the kitchen tile.
They were slow, deliberate, and impossibly calm.
Sophie looked up from Emily's lap, sensing the terror radiating through her mother's body.
"Mommy? Are the monsters outside?" Sophie whimpered, burying her face into Emily's sweater.
"Shh, my angel," Emily whispered, kissing Sophie’s temple while her free hand pulled a heavy steel flashlight from the closet shelf.
She dialed 911 on her phone, muttering her address into the receiver the moment the dispatcher answered.
"Intruder inside the house, send units immediately," Emily breathed before laying the phone down without disconnecting.
Out in the master bedroom, the floorboards groaned under the intruder’s weight.
A shadow passed across the thin crack of light beneath the closet door.
Emily stood up slowly, raising the heavy flashlight above her shoulder, muscles coiled like a striking viper.
She would bash this person’s skull open before she let anyone touch her daughter again.
A gentle knock sounded against the closet door.
"Emily, dear," a smooth, unfamiliar female voice called out through the wood.
The voice was cultured, deep, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
"You don't need to brandish any weapons. I am simply here to deliver an official message on behalf of the family."
"Get out of my house before the police blow your head off!" Emily screamed, stepping between the door and Sophie.
"The local police won't be arriving for another eleven minutes," the voice replied smoothly. "A minor chemical spill was orchestrated on the main avenue two blocks away."
Emily’s heart plummeted into a freezing abyss.
"Who are you?" Emily demanded.
"I am Victoria Vance," the woman replied, her tone dripping with aristocratic condescension. "Evelyn’s elder sister and the executor of the Vance European trusts."
Emily gasped, remembering whispered rumors of the reclusive sister who managed the family’s offshore bank holdings in Zurich.
"Your husband was always a weak, sentimental fool, Emily," Victoria continued through the wood.
"He actually believed he could break free from this family by handing you deeds and apologizing in a playground."
"Daniel turned his back on your sick family!" Emily yelled.
"Daniel signed a power of attorney five years ago during his corporate restructuring," Victoria chuckled coldly.
"A document he never bothered to read, which grants the family council full control over Sophie’s placement should he be deemed mentally unstable."
"He will never sign Sophie over to you!"
"He doesn't need to," Victoria replied, the sound of paper sliding under the closet door rustling against the carpet.
"The petition declaring him incompetent after his public assault on you was filed an hour ago. You have forty-eight hours to hand Sophie over, Emily."
"Over my dead body," Emily spat, her rage burning hotter than her fear.
May you like
"That can easily be arranged," Victoria said smoothly, her footsteps turning away toward the bedroom exit.
Just then, the front door of the house violently shattered inward with the sound of splintering oak.
