Chapter 12 - The Poisoned Legacy

Daniel’s breath hitched on the other end of the line, followed by the violent roar of an engine.
"Get away from the windows, Emily," Daniel commanded, his voice dead serious. "Take Sophie into the interior room right now."
"Don't you dare tell me what to do after what your family has done!" Emily snapped, though she instantly dropped to a crouch.
She crawled toward the kitchen, keeping beneath the sightline of the front windows.
Sophie was humming happily at the breakfast nook, carefully coloring a picture of a golden retriever with a yellow crayon.
"Sophie, sweetie," Emily said as calmly as humanly possible. "We're going to play our hide-and-seek game in Mommy's walk-in closet."
Sophie looked up, her brown eyes bright with innocence. "Did Daddy come to play too?"
The question tore through Emily’s chest like broken glass, but she maintained a gentle smile.
"Not today, baby. Grab your favorite teddy bear and let's go."
Emily guided Sophie into the reinforced master closet, shutting the heavy wood door and locking it from the inside.
She sat on the carpeted floor, holding Sophie against her chest while keeping the phone pressed to her ear.
"I’m in the safe room," Emily whispered. "Tell me everything, Daniel. No more secrets. Not one."
Daniel took a shuddering breath over the phone, the sound of traffic whistling through his open car window.
"Three years ago, my father didn't die of a sudden heart attack," Daniel confessed, his voice trembling with years of buried guilt.
Emily’s eyes widened in the dim closet light. "What did you say?"
"He was going to divorce her, Emily. He discovered she had embezzled tens of millions from the family trust."
"Daniel... what are you saying?"
"The night before he died, he told her he was cutting her out entirely and leaving everything to me and our future children."
A horrific chill swept through Emily's spine, raising the tiny hairs on her arms.
"Your mother killed him?" Emily whispered, horrified that Sophie might hear.
"There was no autopsy because Evelyn insisted on immediate cremation," Daniel choked out, weeping openly. "I suspected it, but I was too weak, too cowardly to face the truth."
"You let a murderer live in the same house as our daughter!" Emily’s voice broke into a silent scream.
"I convinced myself it was paranoia! But today, my father’s old private banker reached out to me secretly."
"Why now?" Emily asked, clutching Sophie tighter against her chest.
"Because the trust fund established by my father has an ironclad trigger clause," Daniel explained, his voice tight with desperation.
"The day Sophie turns five, fifty percent of the Vance empire vests directly in her name under legal guardianship."
Emily’s mind raced as the puzzle pieces slammed together in a horrifying picture.
Sophie’s fifth birthday was only two weeks away.
"Evelyn didn't throw Sophie into the pond out of sudden temper," Emily realized, sheer terror constricting her throat.
"No," Daniel sobbed. "If Sophie died, the entire fortune reverted back to Evelyn under the secondary survival clause."
"It wasn't an impulse," Emily breathed, tears spilling down her cheeks. "It was premeditated murder for money."
"And she knows the charges against her will stick unless she can force a settlement through custody," Daniel warned.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic scrape echoed from the back patio of Emily’s house.
