Chapter 21 - The Stolen Son

Daniel stood frozen beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the bank vault.

The birth certificate trembled violently between his white-knuckled fingers.

"Victoria Vance," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking like dry timber under snow. "Who the hell is Victoria Vance?"

Emily reached out, gently placing her trembling hand over his cold, shaking knuckles.

"Daniel, look at me," Emily pleaded, her own breath catching in her throat. "Look at the date."

Twenty-eight years ago.

The exact day Daniel was registered as the sole heir to the Vance industrial fortune.

"My whole life is a lie," Daniel murmured, staggering back until his spine slammed against the steel deposit boxes. "She isn't my mother."

The woman who had slapped Emily, poisoned their marriage, and thrown four-year-old Sophie into a freezing koi pond was never his flesh and blood.

She was a thief who had stolen him from his real mother's arms.

"We need to move right now," Emily whispered, turning her phone toward his stunned face.

The photograph illuminated Daniel's hollow, horrified eyes.

The steel bars of Evelyn’s maximum-security cell were cut in jagged, precise lines.

Pools of fresh crimson blood smeared the concrete floor beneath a severed guard's baton.

"She didn't just escape," Daniel realized, his voice dropping into a hollow, terrifying register. "Someone broke her out."

Before Emily could answer, the heavy steel door of the vault clicked from the exterior hallway.

The bank manager stepped inside, but his professional smile was gone.

Behind him stood two tall men dressed in charcoal tactical vests, their gloved hands resting on silenced handguns.

"I apologize for the intrusion, Mr. Vance," the manager said coldly, stepping aside.

"Step away from the safety deposit box," the taller gunman ordered, his voice flat and robotic.

Daniel instantly stepped in front of Emily, shielding her behind his broad frame.

"Who paid you?" Daniel demanded, clenching his fists until his veins bulged against his skin. "Evelyn?"

The gunman did not waste breath answering.

He drew his weapon with blinding speed and aimed it squarely at Daniel's forehead.

Emily grabbed the heavy bronze vault ledger from the steel table and hurled it violently across the room.

The heavy book struck the gunman's wrist just as the muffled discharge echoed against the reinforced concrete walls.

The bullet sparked off the steel safety box millimeters above Daniel's ear.

Daniel lunged forward with primal fury, tackling the first mercenary into the floor.

The second gunman raised his weapon toward Emily, his finger squeezing the trigger.

"Daniel, duck!" Emily screamed, diving beneath the steel examination counter.

A deafening blast shattered the vault's air, but it didn't come from the mercenary's gun.

The second gunman collapsed forward, revealing a familiar figure standing in the doorway holding a smoking pistol.

It was Liam, their personal head of private security.

"Grab the box and move!" Liam roared, ejecting a spent shell onto the marble. "The whole street is surrounded!"
