Chapter 44 - The Shattered Bastion

The concussive shockwave of the flash-bang reverberated through the tight confines of the subterranean bunker like a physical hammer blow.
Even through her polarized tactical goggles, Claire saw spots of blinding violet dance across her vision.
The Vanguard operators, trained to expect standard infantry tactics, were momentarily disoriented by the sheer auditory violence delivered at point-blank range.
Julian lay screaming on the shattered tiles, clutching his burned chest and mangled leg as thick, white smoke billowed from his shredded coat.
"Thomas, move!" Claire roared, hauling Admiral Hayes upright by the straps of his load-bearing vest despite the old man's dead weight.
Thomas was already up, his weapon chattering as he laid down a devastating wall of suppressive fire into the smoke-choked doorway.
Two Vanguard operators attempting to advance through the cloud took rounds directly to their center mass and collapsed into the threshold.
"The south vent, now!" Hayes gasped, coughing up dark phlegm as his boots dragged through the debris. "The access latch is behind the secondary battery bay!"
Claire didn't waste breath answering; she threw Hayes’s uninjured arm over her shoulder and surged toward the rear steel maintenance door.
Thomas covered their retreat, walking backward step by step, methodically replacing his empty magazine with a fresh one without ever looking down.
Behind them, through the clearing smoke, Julian’s voice rose in a feral, blood-curdling screech of absolute fury.
"Kill them all!" Julian screamed, coughing through the acrid chemical fumes. "Don't let her leave this room alive!"
A hail of high-caliber rounds slammed into the metal doorframe just as Claire kicked the southern emergency hatch wide open.
They tumbled into a narrow, dimly lit service corridor lined with thick high-voltage cables and dripping moisture pipes.
Thomas slammed the heavy hatch shut behind them, throwing the mechanical locking wheel until the heavy iron dogs engaged with a resonant thud.
Almost instantly, bullets began punching through the thin outer sheet metal of the hatch, leaving jagged holes that sprayed hot sparks into the corridor.
"That won't hold them for more than two minutes," Thomas panted, leaning his shoulder against the vibration before stepping back. "Where does this pipe lead?"
"It drains directly into the old municipal aqueduct beneath the rail yard," Hayes wheezed, his face covered in a sheen of cold, clammy sweat. "Three miles... of abandoned underground tunnels."
"Can you walk, Admiral?" Claire asked, ripping a roll of combat gauze from her medical kit and packing it tightly into his shoulder wound.
Hayes hissed through his teeth in agony, but his eyes remained sharp, focused on his niece with stubborn resolve.
"I can walk until we are out of this tomb, girl," Hayes growled through clenched teeth. "Then you can leave me."
"Nobody is getting left behind today," Claire said firmly, pulling a tight pressure bandage over the wound until the bleeding slowed to a dark trickle.
She retrieved the tablet she had kicked across the floor during the breach; the screen was cracked spider-web thin, but the feed was still flickering.
The red dot on Marcus’s forehead was gone.
Instead, on the small screen, Claire watched in stunned silence as two men dressed in civilian hunting gear dragged the unconscious Vanguard snipers off the opposite roof.
A familiar voice crackled through the tablet’s internal microphone, rough and unmistakable.
"Claire, this is Miller," the radio crackled through the tiny speaker. "We took out the overwatch team. Marcus is secure."
Claire let out a shuddering breath that felt like it tore through her ribs, tears pricking the corners of her eyes before she forced them back.
"How did you know, Miller?" Claire asked into the tablet's mic, her voice shaking with raw relief.
"You really think we’d let you fight Margaret's rats alone while we took sponge baths?" Miller snorted over the static. "The local veterans' chapter had eyes on our clinic within ten minutes of us landing."
"Regroup at Rally Point Delta," Claire commanded, her operational focus snapping instantly back into place. "The syndicate is mobilizing active military assets."
"Understood," Miller replied. "Watch your six, Commander. They’re locking down the entire city grid."
The connection clicked dead as the service corridor trembled violently beneath their feet.
The hatch behind them groaned as a heavy shape-charge detonated on the opposite side, buckling the heavy steel inward like tinfoil.

"They're through," Thomas shouted, pulling Claire toward the descending iron stairs that dropped into the black mouth of the aqueduct.
"Go!" Claire urged, supporting Hayes as they plunged into the damp, echoing subterranean darkness below.
