Chapter 29 - The Convoy to Nowhere

By dawn, the Atlantic coastline was bathed in a pale, sickly gray light.
The coastal patrol craft pulled into a secluded federal Coast Guard facility near Cape May, New Jersey.
Dozens of armed federal agents and military police surrounded the docks, but this time, the uniforms were led by someone Claire trusted.
Admiral Robert Hayes stood on the tarmac, surrounded by heavily armed naval special warfare operators.
"Commander Claire Vance," Hayes said solemnly as she stepped off the gangway, holding Mia tightly against her chest.
"Admiral," Claire said, returning his crisp salute.
"We received the encrypted transmission you routed through Torres’s secure line," Hayes said, looking down at Mia with profound sorrow. "The Department of Defense has verified the records."
"And Margaret?" Claire asked, her voice steady and demanding.
Hayes’s expression hardened into grim stone.
"The ambush was an inside job, Claire," Hayes revealed. "Three federal marshals were killed. Margaret was taken by an extraction team."
"Vance told me she was heading for an airfield in the Appalachians," Claire reported, her eyes burning with exhaustion and fury.
"She didn't head for an airfield," Hayes replied, shaking his head slowly. "She headed for the ancestral estate in the Shenandoah Valley."
Claire froze. "The old hunting lodge?"
"It’s fortified like a military bunker," Hayes explained. "She has forty private mercenaries, heavy anti-aircraft weaponry, and enough diplomatic leverage to cause an international incident if we launch an airstrike."
"She knows the law protects her from a direct military assault on American soil without presidential authorization," Marcus said, stepping up beside Claire, his arm heavily bandaged.
"The President won't authorize a strike until Congress verifies the Chimera files," Hayes sighed heavily. "And that will take forty-eight hours."
"In forty-eight hours, Margaret will be across the border in an extradition-proof nation," Claire said coldly.
"My hands are tied by the chain of command, Claire," Hayes said, stepping closer and lowering his voice to a whisper. "Officially, the United States Navy cannot deploy active operators onto that mountain."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small set of keys, pressing them into Claire’s palm.
"There is an unmarked transport waiting in hangar three," Hayes murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering resolve. "If you resign your commission right now... you are no longer bound by military jurisdiction."
Claire looked down at the keys, then looked back at Mia, who was being gently cared for by a female Navy medical officer.
Mia was safe now; Hayes would protect her with his life.
Claire reached up to her dress uniform, unpinned her Trident insignia, and placed it into Hayes’s weathered hand.
"I resign, Admiral," Claire said without a shred of hesitation.
Marcus immediately stepped forward, reaching for his own insignia.
"Don't you dare, Marcus," Claire ordered, turning on him sharply. "You have a family. You have a future."
"My family is standing right in front of me, Claire," Marcus said quietly, ripping his Trident from his chest and tossing it onto the hood of Hayes’s vehicle.
"I'm coming with you," Marcus said, his jaw set in stone. "To the end."
Torres stepped up from behind them, racking the slide of an automatic combat shotgun.
"Looks like the Old Guard is deploying one last time," Torres grunted, a grim smile touching his scarred lips.
Claire turned toward the misty western mountains, the weight of a lifetime of betrayal concentrating into a single, razor-sharp focus.

"Let's go end Margaret’s war," Claire said.
