Chapter 13 - No One Touches the Girl

Claire sprinted through the reinforced doors of the tactical center before anyone else could react.
Her combat boots pounded against the polished marble floor, the training from ten years of special operations taking over entirely.
Marcus and Miller were half a step behind her, weapons drawn and locked in low-ready positions.
Outside, the calm afternoon of the Naval Academy had devolved into sirens, flashing red strobes, and shouting guards.
Fifty yards across the manicured lawn, a black Cadillac Escalade had driven directly onto the sidewalk in front of the daycare facility.
Four men in civilian tactical gear, masked in dark balaclavas and carrying submachine guns, were dismounting from the vehicle.
"Form a perimeter!" Claire roared across the courtyard, her voice cutting through the wail of sirens like steel.
The lead gunman reached the glass doors of the nursery, raising a sledgehammer to breach the reinforced entrance.
Claire drew her sidearm, planting her feet on the wet grass, and fired two deafening suppression rounds into the brick frame above his head.
The stone exploded in a shower of sparks, forcing the operator to duck down instinctively.
"Back off!" Claire screamed, advancing across the open lawn without a trace of fear.
"Drop your weapons and surrender to federal authorities!" Marcus yelled, flanking wide to the right to create an intersecting line of fire.
The second intruder pivoted toward Claire, raising a suppressed carbine toward her center mass.
Claire dropped into a slide on the damp lawn, evading the incoming suppressed line of fire.
Miller fired three rapid shots, striking the gunman's protective plate and knocking him flat on his back.
The remaining two mercenaries realized they had lost the element of surprise against three elite combat veterans.
"Fall back! Abort mission!" their squad leader barked through a radio headset, scrambling backward toward the idling SUV.
The lead attacker threw a smoke canister onto the front porch, engulfing the glass entryway in an impenetrable white cloud.
The SUV tires screeched violently, burning rubber against the curb as the vehicle reversed rapidly down the pedestrian path.
Claire pushed through the thick, choking smoke, slamming through the shattered glass doors of the nursery.
Inside, midshipmen staff members had barricaded the interior room, shielding terrified children beneath heavy wooden desks.
In the far corner, huddled under an overturned reading table, Mia sat clutching a stuffed bear with wide, terrified eyes.
"Mia!" Claire shouted, discarding her tactical stance and dropping to her knees on the linoleum floor.
Mia burst into tears, throwing her small arms around Claire's neck with all her tiny strength.
"Aunt Claire! The bad men broke the windows!" Mia sobbed into Claire's shoulder.
"I know, baby, I know," Claire whispered, wrapping her arms around the child and burying her face in Mia’s hair.
Marcus appeared at the doorway, rifle raised, eyes sweeping every corner before giving Claire a grim all-clear nod.
"Perimeter is secure, Commander," Marcus said quietly. "Campus security has sealed every exit gate."
Claire carried Mia out into the daylight, where dozens of armed midshipmen and federal agents had surrounded the grounds.
General Vance walked over, his face pale and eyes burning with cold, unforgiving fire.
"One of the vehicles was disabled at Gate 4," Vance stated, staring directly at Claire. "We took the driver alive."
Claire stood up straight, carrying Mia securely against her hip, her face hardened into absolute granite.
"Who sent them, General?" Claire demanded, her voice shaking with lethal restraint.
"He was carrying encrypted credentials from the Sterling Trust," Vance replied, looking down at the pavement.
Claire stared at him in utter disbelief. "My mother is funding hits on her own granddaughter?"
"Not your mother," General Vance corrected, handing Claire a recovered tactical phone from the shooter.
"The orders didn't come from Evelyn," Vance said. "They came from someone who inherited the Sterling estate this morning."
Claire glanced at the screen, her heart turning to ice. "My brother Julian is dead. Who inherited the estate?"
"A man named Raymond Vance," the general whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable shame.
Claire froze, staring at the four-star general she had trusted with her life.

"Your brother?" Claire whispered in horror.
"My son," General Vance confessed, closing his eyes against the nightmare unfolding before them.
