Chapter 32 - The Price of Blood

The flashbang detonated with a blinding white rupture that shook the very foundations of the subterranean bunker.

A wall of deafening sound slammed against the granite walls, disorienting human senses and shattering the crystal chandeliers overhead.

Claire burst from behind the splintered credenza before the smoke could even begin to clear.

Her primary rifle swung across her back; she had no intention of discharging live rounds into the flesh of her resurrected brother.

Thomas was already recovering, his elite instincts fighting through the neurological shock of the flashbang.

He brought the butt of his weapon around in a vicious arc aimed directly at Claire's jaw.

She ducked beneath the strike, closing the distance instantly and driving her shoulder hard into his armored midsection.

The impact sent both of them crashing against the heavy stone wall beneath an ancient Vance family portrait.

"Thomas, snap out of it!" Claire shouted, locking her arm around his weapon to strip it from his grip.

Thomas didn't answer with words; he drove a brutal elbow into her ribs, cracking the breath violently from her lungs.

Pain exploded across her side, sharp and hot, but Claire refused to let go of the weapon's barrel.

She twisted her hips, executing a close-quarters disarm technique they had both learned from the same instructors years ago.

The assault rifle clattered across the stone floor, sliding into the darkness beneath the velvet drapes.

Thomas immediately transitioned to a combat blade, the six-inch serrated steel clearing its sheath with a lethal hiss.

He slashed diagonally at her throat, the edge missing her collar by less than a millimeter.

"You fight like a ghost," Claire panted, catching his wrist in a two-handed lock, her muscles straining against his unnatural strength.

"Ghosts don't feel pain," Thomas whispered, his dead eyes boring straight through her.

He twisted his trapped arm with violent, bone-snapping force, entirely indifferent to his own tearing ligaments.

The sheer disregard for his own physical survival broke Claire's grip, forcing her to leap back to avoid a disemboweling thrust.

Across the room, the heavy iron security door groaned as Margaret backed toward the emergency elevator.

"Deal with her, Thomas," Margaret sneered from the threshold, punching an override sequence into the wall panel. "The convoy is already crossing the Delaware."

"Margaret, don't move!" Claire bellowed, reaching for her sidearm.

Thomas lunged forward like a striking serpent, his blade slicing cleanly through the Kevlar shoulder strap of Claire's vest.

Blood welled instantly from a shallow cut along her collarbone, warm and crimson against her tactical uniform.

Claire pivoted on her heel, driving a front kick directly into Thomas’s sternum that sent him stumbling back against the fireplace mantel.

The heavy iron door slammed shut with a hydraulic hiss, sealing Margaret Vance into the escape tunnel.

Claire stood chest-to-chest with her brother in the ruined room, the air thick with cordite, ozone, and spilled blood.

Thomas lowered his blade into a guard stance, showing neither fatigue nor emotion despite the bruising force of her strike.

"She abandoned you, Thomas," Claire said, keeping her voice low and steady despite the blood dripping down her arm. "Just like she abandoned me."

For the briefest fraction of a second, Thomas's left eyelid twitched, a faint ripple of confusion disturbing the glassy stillness of his face.

"Target... is non-compliant," he muttered, the words sounding recited, torn from some deeply buried psychological programming.

"I am your sister," Claire took a deliberate step closer, deliberately lowering her knife hand to expose her chest. "Look at the patch on my chest, Thomas. Look at the Sangin crest."

His gaze dropped slowly to the faded fabric badge pinned over her heart—the exact unit patch he had given her before his supposed deployment to Kandahar.

The hand holding the combat knife began to tremble violently, vibrating against the cold mountain air leaking through the shattered stonework.

"Claire...?" a cracked, broken whisper escaped his lips, carrying the unmistakable inflection of the boy she had grown up with.

Before she could reach him, the red emergency sirens across the bunker ceiling screamed to life.

A synthetic voice echoed through the hidden speakers: *Self-destruct sequence initiated. Structural collapse in three minutes.*
