Chapter 23 - Entombed in the Dark

Claire didn't panic; her heart rate remained cold and steady as her breathing slowed to complete silence.
She felt the stone walls around her, calculating the thickness of the centuries-old masonry.
The sound of footsteps faded from the threshold, replaced by the distinct hiss of pressurized gas.
Through the narrow ventilation crack near the ceiling, a sweet, chemical vapor began pouring down into the cellar.
"Cyanide derivative," Claire muttered to herself, instantly recognizing the acrid almond undertone from her survival training.
She pulled off her wool scarf, soaked it with water from her tactical canteen, and tied it tightly across her nose and mouth.
She had less than two minutes before the concentration reached fatal toxicity within the enclosed stone chamber.
She reached for the emergency egress hatch her father had designed behind the steel cabinet—a forgotten coal chute leading to the gardens.
With a heavy iron pry bar kept inside the vault, she jammed the wedge into the rusted hinges of the chute.
Metal groaned in agony against stone.
She drove her shoulder into the bar with every ounce of physical power she possessed, ignoring the sharp pain radiating down her spine.
The rusted iron gave way with a sharp pop, showering her in flakes of oxidized iron and coal dust.
She scrambled through the tight, jagged opening, clawing her way upward through the wet mud toward the surface.
The night air hit her lungs like ice water as she burst through the concealed brush of the rose garden.
She rolled onto her side, coughing violently into the damp grass, purging the chemical fumes from her throat.
Fifty yards away, near the treeline where Marcus had parked the car, the sharp crack of a suppressed gunshot shattered the night.
"Marcus!" Claire gasped, scrambling to her feet and sprinting through the darkness.
Another two shots followed in rapid succession—the rhythmic double-tap of an expert assassin.
She broke through the perimeter hedges just in time to see the unmarked sedan rock violently on its suspension.
A tall figure clad in black combat fatigues was standing at the driver's side window, weapon raised.
Claire leveled her pistol while sprinting at full speed, squeezing the trigger twice without breaking stride.
The rounds struck the assassin’s armored shoulder, spinning him around and forcing him away from the driver’s door.
The man grunted, rolled backward over the hood, and vanished into the thick undergrowth with terrifying speed.
Claire reached the car and wrenched the door open.
Marcus was slumped over the steering wheel, blood soaking through the front of his tactical vest.
In the back seat, Mia was screaming, her hands pressed over her ears in absolute terror.
"Marcus! Look at me!" Claire yelled, pressing her fingers against his carotid artery.
His pulse was rapid and thready, but he was alive.
"Vest took... the brunt..." Marcus wheezed, his teeth clenched against the agony of broken ribs. "He took... the drive."
Claire’s eyes flicked to the dashboard; the navigation system and the digital backup drive containing the military tribunal files were gone.
"He didn't want to kill us," Marcus gasped, clutching his bruised chest. "He wanted... the location."
"The location of what?" Claire asked, pulling him upright.
"The secondary safehouse," Marcus whispered, blood trickling from his split lip. "Where Reyes hid the original Sangin hard drives."
Mia reached forward from the back seat, her tiny hand brushing against Marcus’s bloody shoulder.
"Uncle Marcus, don't sleep," Mia sobbed softly. "Please don't sleep."
Claire looked up through the shattered windshield into the dark canopy of the forest.

A red laser dot suddenly danced across the glass, settling directly on Mia’s forehead.
