Chapter 21 - The Serpent’s Mark in broad Daylight

Claire stared at the tiny silver signet ring resting in Mia’s soft, unblemished palm.
The sunlight glinted off the polished metal, illuminating the terrifyingly familiar carving of an eagle crushed in the jaws of a viper.
Every muscle in Claire’s body locked into absolute combat readiness.
Her pulse roared in her ears, drowning out the ambient hum of traffic along the Pentagon corridor.
"Mia," Claire said softly, her voice dropping into a calm, measured register designed to prevent the seven-year-old from panicking. "Where did the man go?"
Mia tilted her head, pointing a tiny finger toward the crowded transit station across the boulevard.
"He had sunglasses on, Aunt Claire," the little girl murmured. "He smelled like mint and old paper."
Marcus immediately shifted his weight, his right hand sliding naturally beneath his jacket toward his concealed sidearm.
"Claire, stay with the child," Marcus muttered, his eyes sweeping across the dense crowd of tourists, military personnel, and government workers.
"Marcus, wait!" Claire commanded in a sharp, suppressed whisper. "If it's Phantom, he wants you to break formation."
Marcus froze, his boots planted firmly against the manicured grass of the perimeter lawn.
He knew she was right; Phantom never acted without setting a lethal perimeter trap first.
Claire gently took the heavy silver ring from Mia's fingers and slipped it into her pocket.
The cold metal felt like a block of ice against her thigh, sending chills radiating down her spine.
"The test said 99.9% match," Marcus whispered, his eyes locked on Claire. "How is that biologically possible?"
"Phantom isn't just an operative," Claire said, her jaw clenching so hard her teeth ached. "He was my brother's direct commander during the secret operations in Helmand."
She remembered the redacted field reports Margaret had buried deep inside the family foundation’s archives.
Margaret hadn't just shielded a traitor; she had sheltered Mia's real father from military tribunal execution.
"We need to get off this open lawn," Marcus urged, his tactical instincts taking full control. "Now."
A black government SUV pulled up to the curb forty yards away, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically.
Two men in dark suits stepped out, but their movements lacked the standard discipline of federal marshals.
Their eyes were fixed directly on Mia.
"North exit," Claire ordered, sweeping Mia up into her left arm while keeping her dominant hand entirely free.
"They're moving," Marcus reported, stepping sideways to form a walking shield between the street and the child.
The two men crossed the sidewalk at an accelerated pace, their hands buried deep within their trench coats.
"Federal agents! Halt!" one of the men called out, flashing an unfamiliar gold badge across the grass.
Claire didn't slow down for a fraction of a second.
"That's not Homeland or Diplomatic Security," Claire said coldly under her breath. "Those are Margaret’s private contractors."
"Margaret is locked in a high-security holding cell at Quantico," Marcus replied, disbelief tinting his voice.
"A woman with Margaret’s wealth doesn't need to be free to issue execution orders," Claire countered grimly.
They reached the heavy concrete barrier guarding the inner pedestrian walkway of the Pentagon complex.
Security cameras turned silently overhead, tracking their rapid transit toward the secured checkpoint.
Behind them, the two men suddenly broke into an outright sprint across the emerald lawn.
"Clear the lane!" Marcus roared, flashing his active SEAL credentials at the surprised gate guards.
The armed security police instantly brought their rifles to low-ready, observing the approaching pursuers.
Seeing the military rifles raised, the two suited men abruptly stopped, spun on their heels, and vanished into the crowd.
Mia buried her face into Claire’s neck, her small fingers clutching the collar of Claire’s dress uniform.
"Did I do something wrong, Aunt Claire?" Mia whispered, her voice trembling with rising fear.
"No, sweetheart," Claire whispered back, pressing a kiss against the girl’s soft hair. "You did everything right."
Marcus leaned close, his expression dark as storm clouds. "Where do we run when the government itself is compromised?"
Claire looked down at the silver ring in her pocket, feeling the cold weight of a long-buried war.
May you like
"We don't run," Claire said coldly. "We go back to where the lie began."
