Chapter 14 - Bloodline of Treason

The silence inside General Vance’s private office was suffocating, broken only by the distant rain beginning to lash the windows.
Mia was asleep in the adjacent security room, guarded by Miller and two armed Marine guards.
Claire stood across the heavy mahogany desk from General Vance, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.
Marcus stood by the door, his hand resting silently on his holstered weapon, eyes locked on the general's shoulders.
"Explain," Claire said, each syllable dropping like frozen iron onto the table.
General Vance did not sit; he stood by the glass window looking out at the gray, storm-swept waters of the bay.
"Thirty years ago, your father and I served together in naval intelligence," Vance began, his voice raspy and ancient.
"We thought we were building an empire that would protect this country from the shadows," he said.
"What did you build, General?" Marcus interrupted sharply from the doorway.
Vance turned slowly, looking older than his seventy years, the weight of a lifetime of deception etched into his forehead.
"A shadow contractor network called The Falcon Consortium," Vance admitted, his jaw trembling slightly.
"It started as a legitimate off-the-books logistics operation for classified military deployments," Vance explained.
"Then the politicians got involved," Vance continued bitterly. "Your mother, Evelyn, brought in private equity capital from Wall Street."
"And my father?" Claire demanded, stepping forward until she was inches away from the decorated four-star flag officer.
"Your father realized what they were doing and tried to pull out," Vance said, looking directly into Claire's burning eyes.
"The night he crashed his car off the Maryland bridge... it was no mechanical failure, Claire," Vance whispered.
Claire felt the room spin beneath her boots, the ground shifting beneath every memory of her childhood.
"They murdered my father?" she whispered, her voice barely carrying above the sound of the rain.
"Your mother signed the authorization," Vance said, tears welling in the veteran officer's gray eyes.
"She chose the billions over her own husband," Vance added with sickening certainty.
"And Raymond?" Marcus asked, his jaw tight. "Where does your son fit into this bloodbath?"
"Raymond took over the operational arm after Julian died," Vance explained, shaking his head in profound sorrow.
"Julian was supposed to be the public face—the senator who would protect the defense contracts in Congress," Vance said.
"When Julian took that suicide leap off the roof, the entire network faced catastrophic collapse," Vance added.
"And you let me think my brother was an innocent victim?" Claire yelled, the rage exploding from her chest.
"Julian wasn't a victim, Claire! He was their money man!" Vance shouted back, his face crimson with emotion.
"He killed himself because Corporal Reyes’s family filed a wrongful death inquiry that was about to blow the whole syndicate open!"
"And Reyes was Mia’s father," Marcus said, the truth finally slamming into place with horrific clarity.
General Vance nodded slowly, hanging his head in absolute humiliation.
"Evelyn didn't want Mia raised by you because she knew you would eventually uncover the financial trail," Vance revealed.
"She wanted Mia in an offshore orphanage where no investigator would ever look," Vance said.
Claire slammed both hands onto the mahogany desk, leaning forward until Vance was forced to meet her glare.
"Where is Raymond taking my mother right now?" Claire snarled, every ounce of her lethal training surfacing in her eyes.
Vance reached slowly into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small titanium encrypted flash drive.
"They're heading to the private airfield at Blackwater Marsh," Vance confessed quietly.
"A cargo plane is fueled and scheduled for departure to an unextradited offshore territory in two hours," Vance said.
"If that plane leaves the ground, Raymond and your mother will disappear with three billion dollars of stolen blood money."
Claire snatched the drive from the desk and turned toward the door without another word.
"Claire," Vance called out, his voice cracked with desperate regret. "What are you going to do?"
May you like
Claire halted at the threshold, looking back over her shoulder with eyes that could freeze fire.
"I’m going to do the job the United States military trained me to do," she said coldly. "I’m hunting them down."
